Tanner Gilpin is an Augur and apprentice of Alexander Belanger.

Personality

He's a fast learner and good with politics, because of this Alexander often sends him to run errands for him.<ref name=":0" />

Relationships

Bristow recruited him after he became Aware, using his abilities to warn him of any upcoming problems.<ref>Apparently Bristow set up the school, but managing that many Aware takes time and attention.  So he arranged it so Tanner could tip him off about the big incidents and keep an eye on things.  Tanner gets scooped up, Bristow can’t give the school the attention it needs without losing everything else- Excerpt from Cutting Class 6.3</ref>

He was friends with Chase, Seth and Wye. The four of them used to smoke together in Alexander's office.

Gillian Rose is in love with Tanner and Wye is considering having them marry after Gillian completes university.<ref>“I think Wye is probably going to raise the idea of marrying her to Tanner.”

Appearance

He's very attractive and has swept back brown/blond hair with twirly locks, narrow eyes, a square face and a sharp chin. He wears suits similar to Alexanders<ref>Chase was… he was that but taken in the wrong direction.  Hair that looked more nineties than twenty-twenty, face too small for his head.  He was too soft at the edges of his features, he’d missed shaving spots at the corners of his sorta-nonexistent jaw, and his clothes looked expensive but, maybe like his hair had maybe been, before, it looked like he’d shelled out the money but hadn’t done the upkeep.  Maybe that was his entire character.- Excerpt from Vanishing Points 8.5</ref><ref>“Tanner Gilpin, Aware picked up and made an apprentice of Alexander, currently working under Wye as part of the Belanger circle.  Eminent augurs and problem solvers, currently working with the Blue Heron Institute as a base of operations.  Wye would be here but he’s currently on a project.”

Tanner was a good looking guy with parted brown hair, a square face and the same mode of dress Alexander had liked for young Wye, back when Basil had crossed paths with him.  It was hard to imagine Wye now being old enough to manage the Belanger Circle after Alexander’s passing.- Excerpt from Fall Our 14.z</ref> A slight fold in his eyes hints at asian grandparents.<ref>Tanner chuckled, running fingers through his hair to fix it some.  He had a slight fold at the corner of his eyes that suggested maybe one Asian grandparent, but was blond and attractive.  He still looked a tiny bit uncomfortable in the starched blue button-up, tie, suit jacket, and suit pants.  Wye wore similar, but had gone with dark blue.- Excerpt from Gone and Done It 17.y</ref>

Abilities

He can predict events and do long distance seeing.<ref>“I’m not a fighter,” Tanner said.  “I predict events.  I do long-distance seeing.  Sure.  Take me out of the fight.”- Excerpt from Gone Ahead 7.8</ref>

When reading cards he can manage an arrangment of four by four with confidence.<ref>Wye was good enough with the cards to teach it.  They had students do a two-by-two arrangement, very vague, and when students hit the wall, they would have them figure out how and why, and if anyone could work their way past that wall.  Seth had been able to do a three-by-three arrangement, Nicolette was about the same, though she could stretch things out to a four-by-four with focus.  Tanner and Wye could do a four-by-four confidently.- Excerpt from Gone and Done It 17.y</ref>

Chronology

He originally became aware after walking into a neighbour's house after a fire and seeing writing on the wall that told him the neighbour would die in hospital. When he went back the words had changed so he used an axe to remove that section of wall. He used the words to get into a good school and get an internship at a talent finding company, after that the words became more threatening.

He was noticed and recruited by Bristow and who used him in his collectors diagram, later Alexander Awakened him and taught him Augury. This caused Bristow's diagram and school to fail.<ref name=":0">She handed the cup to Tanner.  Slightly inebriated.  Tanner had come into the circle through talent.  He’d found an auspice, an almost literal sign of things to come, writing on a wall that told of coming hardships, and through that entry point, had lost his innocence and found his way to contact with Others, then to the practitioner community.  Alexander had taken him under his wing to avoid letting other Augurs have him.  He picked things up fast and was good at politics.  Alexander sent him on a lot of ‘errands’, networking and doing business with other families.  Tanner had meant something very similar to what Seth had said, but he had the common sense that let him get away with it.- Excerpt from Stolen Away 2.z</ref><ref>“Tanner, one of Alexander’s other apprentices, was supposed to be a student there,” Nicolette said.  “Tanner was aware, after he entered a neighbor’s house after a fire.  He saw words scrawled on the wall, telling the neighbor he was going to die in the hospital.”

“And he did?” Lucy guessed.

“He went back after he heard about him passing, and the words had changed,” Nicolette answered.  “He took an axe to the wall and took it home.  After he’d moved up in life, using the words, got into a good school, got a nice paying internship at sixteen, at a big headhunting and talent sales company, the words started getting vicious.  Telling him scary things that would come to pass a day later.  The landlord and head of the small private school found him.”

Bristow persuaded him to defect to his side during his battle with Alexander by offering him a position with a powerful family, residence at a conflux of power and introduced him to two potential mates.<ref>“Tanner?” Alexander asked.  “I know you and Lawrence have a history.  He sent you a Christmas card.  You talk from time to time, and you talk to Reid Musser, who talks to his father, who talks to Bristow.”

“Yeah.  He’s offered me a position with a powerful family, residence at a conflux of power.  If he becomes headmaster, I’ll have continued attendance here.  If not, then there are a few opportunities elsewhere.”

He helped Musser with his Lordship plan by doing readings for him. He predicted that in order to succeed they would need Florin Pesch and that Grayson Hennigar would either loss a son or that Musser will loss the Blue Heron Institute.<ref>We need Florin Pesch in the early stages.
