</infobox> Chase Whitt is an augur work as part of the Belanger Circle and older brother to Fernanda Whitt.

Personality[edit]

At times he can be vulgar and sexist.<ref>You’re vulgar.  The things you and your friends say about girls.”-Excerpt from Cutting Class 6.z</ref>

He struggles to deal with the expectations that's been placed upon him by his family and the loneliness that comes with it.<ref>“Chase, you talked about the expectations on you, and you sobbed.  You spent the night with your non-practitioner friends and you said you were thinking about not seeing them anymore, because the loneliness was so bad you either couldn’t sleep the night after or you had to get drunk to fall asleep.  You had a list of resentments to rail against, things our mother and father did and didn’t do. It took work, to keep you quiet.”-Excerpt from Cutting Class 6.z</ref> Part of why he accepts Bristow's offer is so that the responsibility for his families future wouldn't be on him.<ref>“For all the good it’ll do me personally.  I can’t do this anymore.  I can’t- I can’t be the sole hope of my entire family.”

“You make it sound like it’s more about running than it is about helping them,” Zed accused.-Excerpt from Cutting Class 6.z</ref>

Relationships[edit]

Chase is incredibly proud of his little sister, Fernanda Whitt<ref>She will be an asset.  He still feels that way, I think.  Other times you make him want to pull his hair out, but… overall good.”

...

“Speaking for myself, you haven’t said or done anything to change my mind on that.”

-Excerpt from Cutting Class 6.z</ref> and is sad that the two of them aren't closer.<ref>“We’re not close, Chase.  We’re only barely brother and sister.”

“That can change.”

He wanted so badly to close this divide.
-Excerpt from Cutting Class 6.z</ref> Fernanda for her part is annoyed that his privileged position within the family meant he got more opportunities than her.<ref name=":2">Our father gives me money and I always put a bit of it aside, thinking about the events the family has coming up, or people that are coming to visit, and what I might need to wear then.”

“And here I just go to the tailor when told and they make me a closet of suits.”

“You get, Chase. You’re the golden child, you got chances, and you get more things handed to you.”
-Excerpt from Cutting Class 6.z</ref>

Chase is formally Nicolettes sponsor but due to how much time he has spent away she is now more Alexander's apprentice than Chase's.<ref name=":0">He was her sponsor.  The one who had brought her into the circle.  Alexander, in turn, was the one who had brought Chase in; Chase had been brought in because he was very, very good at dealing with certain kinds of Other, owing to his family ties, and because of the politics of it.  Making Chase an apprentice and teaching him all sorts of things about Seeing made for strong ties with Chase’s family.

He had expected something very different when he had found her.  Leverage against Alexander, maybe.  More power.  A grateful girl a year younger than him.  Instead, Chase had had to go to school, he’d left her here to act as eyes, ears, and hands on things here, and Alexander had started to barter with her, making her more Alexander’s apprentice than Chase’s.- Excerpt from Stolen Away 2.z</ref>

Alexander brought Chase into the Circle hoping to gain closer ties to the Whitt family.<ref name=":0" />

Seth and Chase were close to each other,<ref>Chase, she guessed.  He was the closest to Seth.- Excerpt from Stolen Away 2.z</ref> the two of them smoked cannabis together.<ref>Chase and Seth jeered, laughing.  They were the ones smoking joints.- Excerpt from Stolen Away 2.z</ref>

He called Zed by his old name Zoe when they confronted the Hungry Choir.<ref>“Zoe,” Chase said.

“It’s Zed now,” Zed told the guy, thumb and finger pressed against his eyelids, rubbing.  “It has been for a year and a half, you know that.  Don’t make me punch you.”-Excerpt from Out on a Limb 3.z</ref>

Appearance[edit]

He used to be good looking but has since gained weight. He has black hair stylised into a swoop,<ref>He swayed a bit, and his eyes were visibly red even by candlelight.  Alcohol and drugs lowered defenses, which was part of why she couldn’t indulge.  Chase hinted at his motives in how he looked at her, and in the faint frustration he evidenced.  His hair was a bit messy, and his shirt was unbuttoned.  He’d been a guy who had been good looking, and could be again, but for the time being, was about thirty pounds overweight, wearing pants that didn’t fit.  He thought he was being subtle, unbuttoning his pants to alleviate the pressure on his waistline, and using his belt to keep his pants up, but the ‘v’ of the zipper pulling open at the top betrayed his ploy.  His hair remained styled, an older-fashioned swoop of black hair at the brow, his chin shaven, his clothes business casual, even in ‘leisure’.- Excerpt from Stolen Away 2.z</ref> soft features, very little jaw line and a face that's too small for his head.<ref>Chase was… he was that but taken in the wrong direction.  Hair that looked more nineties than twenty-twenty, face too small for his head.  He was too soft at the edges of his features, he’d missed shaving spots at the corners of his sorta-nonexistent jaw, and his clothes looked expensive but, maybe like his hair had maybe been, before, it looked like he’d shelled out the money but hadn’t done the upkeep.  Maybe that was his entire character.-Excerpt from Vanishing Point 8.5</ref> He likes wearing expensive suits.<ref name=":2" />

Abilities[edit]

He has keen sight, is skilled at finding hidden things<ref name=":1" /> and is very good at dealing with certain kinds of Others.<ref name=":0" />

He can see the future by reading cards, rolling dice and looking at bird entrails.<ref>“I was kind of hoping to have more time, to lay down some cards-”

...

“-to roll dice, pull the guts out of birds…”-Excerpt from Cutting Class 6.z</ref>

Chronology[edit]

He joined the Belanger Circle after it was discovered he had an especially keen Sight, particularly when finding hidden or elusive things.<ref name=":1">Chase joined the Belangers from the Whitt family after it was found that he had naturally keen Sight, especially when it came to finding elusive and hidden things. He helps with the Belanger business and attends Advanced classes.- Excerpt from Student Guide</ref>

He investigated Kennet looking for information about the Hungry Choir.<ref>Ever since, I’ve set lesser apprentices to the task, to see if they can surprise me by finding something relevant.”

“Did Nicolette?”

“Not yet.  Chase here has.”- Excerpt from Out on a Limb 3.2</ref> Later he was part of the group that bound the Choir, helping by directing Brie towards Yalda.<ref>Chase was relaying the directions.  He didn’t have tools, he didn’t have the ability to speak, nothing to write with.  Just Sight and what he’d trained himself to do on a raw, personal level.- Exceprt from Out on a Limb 3.z</ref>

When Bristow attempted to take the school from Alexander he persuaded Chase to defect by offering him an apprenticeship for every member of the Whitt family and a cure for his unwell aunt.<ref>“Apprenticeships for every member of the Whitt family.  Fernanda, my cousins.  The adults who want to learn.  A cure for a heart-wrenching my aunt suffered, when practice backfired.”-Excerpt from Cutting Class 6.z</ref> After using Augury he discovers that if he takes the deal every member of his family will be happy except himself, that his family will stop acting like a family and stop visiting each other or taking holidays together.<ref>“With Bristow, you get a better life.  Our cousins do, our mother and father do.  Some struggle, alone and far from home, it spreads us out.  We stop being even a facsimile of a family.  There are no more Christmas holidays, no more ski vacations in Europe, no Caribbean, no sailing trips, no troll hunts.  Only the passing visits.  One of us passing through a town where another lives, having drinks, and catching up.  But all of us are happier alone.  Except me.”-Excerpt from Cutting Class 6.z</ref>

He was present during the final fight against Bristow during which he managed to wake up all the people that were put to sleep when Jorja summoned the Drugstore Cowgirl.<ref>“Open your eyes!”  Chase shouted, clapping.

The clap came with a breeze, or a shockwave.  The lights in people’s eyes went out like candles blown out in a strong wind.

The sleeping people awoke.- Excerpt from Gone Ahead 7.9</ref>
