Geography/Description

Kennet Found is a third location sharing the same space as both the Kennet Overcity and the Kennet Undercity. It is meant to be a place of stasis that allows healing and safety for its residents,<ref>“In defining this place, I made it a tranquil, resting place, with the idea that, well, I have to define it by what Kennet above and Kennet below aren’t, and what they aren’t, I find, is calm.  This is a healing place and a place in a kind of controlled stasis.  If anyone needs healing or needs a break, I hope they can come here.  Keep an ear out for any mentions of wounded or ailing.  Louise Bayer, council head of Kennet above, has her health issues.  Matthew Moss is recovering, as I said.  If you can ask without it being too awkward or forced, do ask.” - Excerpt from Wild Abandon 18.a

Luna Hare said, “Kennet found is great for your health, as you can get plenty of rest, you don’t need to eat, and you can prioritize you. It’s a safe place. We’ve already made deals with Kennet below, to take in a few of their less able and elderly.” - Excerpt from Wild Abandon 18.3</ref> as such it has a relaxed and carefree atmosphere even if the residents are a bunch of paper worshipers.<ref name=":0" />

The houses all tend to be on stilts or similar with a few exceptions.

Food is readily available but most of the Foundlings don't need to eat.<ref>“You don’t need to eat, though.”

“Oh, uh, no. Food gets supplied, just enough to keep us going, but we won’t hurt too much if we don’t have any. Water’s free, milk is delivered in the mornings. More than I need. There’s a box with free eggs, gardens for vegetables.- Excerpt from Wild Abandon 18.a</ref> Goods and services are relatively cheap but take a lot of time to arrange.<ref>“It’s a bit tricky. I think you’ll find it’s not expensive, it’s just… time expensive. Finding the right people to do it.”- Excerpt from Wild Abandon 18.a</ref>

Laws

Kennet Found is governed by a strict set of laws, these Laws are inevitable and inviolable similar to true prophecy.<ref>“It’s Law,” Vaughn said. “Inevitable. It’s like when something makes a True prophecy, you could be a major practitioner dealing with a lesser power, doesn’t matter. Law is this is meant to happen.” - Excerpt from Gone and Done It 17.x</ref>

These Laws include

  • Not wearing a mask or face covering<ref name=":1">But I can issue a writ to four of you for existing in-bounds without a pass, a writ to three of you for not wearing face coverings. Pulling your shirt up doesn’t count, sir.” - Excerpt from Gone and Done It 17.x</ref> the mask must be explicitly meant to cover faces and not something improvised.
  • Not having a pass giving permission to stay<ref name=":1" />
  • Walking away whilst a writ is being written
  • Unwarranted seizure of property or vandalism<ref name=":3">“There are other laws for unwarranted seizure of property, vandalism, attempting to flee while being issued a writ, circumvention of a writ, forgery of a pass or permission, all stuff she says is fairly standard and expected.” - Excerpt from Gone and Done It 17.x</ref>
  • Attempting to forge a pass<ref name=":3" />
  • Having bound Others with out permission<ref>Those things you have with you need subordinate passes, permission, certification, and bonds fees, which may be waived with signed permission from four separate local council members.

    ...

Is Vaughn being cornered into letting his creatures go? - Excerpt from Gone and Done It 17.x</ref>
  • Abusing a bound Others or extracting information from them<ref>“And additional things. If you abuse a bound Other or extract power or information from them, as part of the penalty you have to pay them back treble the amount. I think that’s a fancy word for triple. Familiars aren’t counted in that.” - Excerpt from Gone and Done It 17.y</ref>
  • You're also not able to use violence or harm anyone, the sole exception to this is when the moon is bleeding<ref>Violence is only permitted when the moon is bleeding. You can get the details on schedule for the bleeding moon, various office openings, trash pickup, and recycling pickup at the town hall, train station, or any main gate, - Excerpt from Gone and Done It 17.x</ref> called the "attack hour".<ref>The mom or nanny, by comparison, just had a battered helmet that looked like an overturned pot with holes carved out for the eyes. All were wearing red.

“Is everything okay?” Lucy asked, trying to find some connection.

The woman lunged, then saw the paper, stopping.

“It’s attack hour,” the woman said.

    “Okay, uh.”

“I hope they get some exercise so they nap later.”

“Yeah. Good luck with that.” - Excerpt from Wild Abandon 18.1</ref>
  • Attempting or threatening to harm Kennet Found, Kennet Below or Kennet Above<ref>She said one rule they discovered was against threats of violence made to Kennet found or to its partner towns, they’re calling Kennet above and Kennet below. That includes, uh, implied but pointed threats made with the intention of harming all or most of the town. - Excerpt from Gone and Done It 17.y</ref>

Failing to comply with these rules can result in the offender receiving a writ, these writs compel the offender to visit a specific location in a certain amount of time.<ref name=":2">Aggravated existence without face covering.

To resolve, first remedy, then visit Gate B (east), have this page stamped.

“And to wrap this up, stamps,” the girl with the bunny mask said. “Hands out.”

“Why stamps?” Shay asked.

“To let others know. The ink will disappear in about twenty minutes for you. That is about as much time as it takes to walk to…” the girl craned her head to see Shay’s page. “Central Kennet church to Lost gods, for your pass.” - Excerpt from Gone and Done It 17.x</ref> The place your required to visit differs from person to person and depends on your gender, age and name.<ref>“They’re splitting us up,” Vaughn observed. “Same violation, different locations?”

“Yes!” the girl exclaimed. “Different genders, different age classes. These two boys are going to the same building for the mask violation. But different floors. A-M last name for that mister, N-Z last name for that one. - Excerpt from Gone and Done It 17.x</ref> Repeated violations or refusing to accept a writ can result in the writ being stamped "aggravated".<ref name=":5">“And what happens if we ignore the instructions to… go to factory C to get an embossed pass?”

“Um,” the girl said. She held up the papers, then let them go.

The wind caught them and carried them to Cal and Easton. The papers shuddered in the air, pausing midway through being blown by the wind, and turned from white paper to red. Easton caught it before it could slap him in the chest.

Stamped on the page was now ‘aggravated’, in bold black ink. - Excerpt from Gone and Done It 17.x</ref>

If you leave without completing a writ you leave something behind, for an aggravated writ it's ten somethings, some items can become consolidated into a single group to prevent cheating.<ref>“Ignoring a writ without resolution. If you leave or let a writ expire, which takes a month, according to the fine print,” Gillian said, looking down at the paper. “You leave something behind. For an aggravated writ, it’s ten distinct somethings. Past a threshold, measures Estrella doesn’t understand, groupings are consolidated?”

...

“Groupings are consolidated?” Wye mused. “If you have ten thousand pennies…”

“Then maybe if it looks for some object to make you leave behind, it just makes you leave behind your collection of pennies?” Nicolette guessed, “instead of picking one at random?”- Excerpt from Wild Abandon 18.a</ref>

Foundlings that issue writs earn money.<ref>I won’t tell you to violate the rules but I’m a bit glad you did. I’ll get some pocket money for issuing the writs, enough to last me a few weeks.” - Excerpt from Gone and Done It 17.x</ref> Good deeds are also rewarded by memo's which can be used as currency as are the writs, these can also be turned into actual local currency.<ref name=":0">It wasn’t talked about a lot, and things were still brand new, in a way, but there had clearly been an effort made to make this a relaxed and easy place. The writs weren’t a concern for the residents, people were taken care of. There was incentive to be good, and incentive to work, but it wasn’t made a big deal or a focus.

It cost nothing to issue a memo for a good deed, and the memos could be used as a kind of currency, or turned in for a less kind, more meager currency. It was better to hold onto them and use them without turning them in, usually. - Excerpt from Wild Abandon 18.a</ref>

It's also possible to apply for asylum if you want to stay here long term.<ref>“Provisional passes are signed permission to be here. You may also make the claim to asylum, with stated intent to remain here for the long term, or if you have a valid local mailing address or the intent to obtain it, the need for passes is waived.” - Excerpt from Gone and Done It 17.x</ref>

Points of Interest

Here the Kennet Arena is intact and uses to hold civility classes for repeat rule-breakers.

Miss takes up residence in the records office where residents can turn in writs in exchange for money.<ref>Hard Pass 22.5</ref> It also serves as the town hall.<ref>It was a winding path, and Kelsey didn’t know if it was meant to be scenic, or meant to give them time to cool down, or if all the paths were winding and scenic here in this new Kennet. It looked like they could be.Luna had to do a puzzle at a gate to open it, which made another two gates swing closed. Some foundlings ducked through as if they were cars trying to beat a red light.

They walked to the town hall, which was more elaborate and fancy than anything in Kennet. Like some Victorian university, gray stone cast in a blue tint by the perpetual twilight, clocktower at the top, and birds flying out with papers in beaks and talons.

They went up a set of stairs, around the catwalk-like second floor that looked down on the fluttering papers that were collected and sorted in the lobby, and around to the back half of the second floor, where Miss was sorting things out, penning the occasional paper, while her subordinates milled around her. - Excerpt from Go for the Throat 23.a</ref>

There's a Central Kennet church of Lost Gods,<ref name=":2" /> and a number of unspecified factories<ref name=":5" /> where goods seem to be produced.

A Hotel exists that caters to the eclectic tastes of the Lost.<ref>The room was small-ish, with two beds separated by a nightstand, a dresser that served as a TV stand, running along one wall, with a hollow portion at the end just in front of Lucy’s bed where a pair of chairs sat, to be an eating spot or work desk.

Mostly, there were a ton of mirrors, arranged on ceiling, floor, as decoration, and near the window.  When Lucy sat up, crossing her legs, hands gripping her ankles, she could look forward and see herself from the side, on one of the mirrors on the long dresser.  She could look at the window and see down both lengths of the street.

Every room in this Kennet found motel was similar, with a theme.  It seemed like any foundlings coming to stay would pick a room and there’d be interplay between any gimmicks or special circumstances.  Kettle headed individuals would fog up the mirrors, creating an effect, and the foundlings that were more two dimensional than three dimensional would appear different here, even to the point that they could be interacted with in three dimensions. - Excerpt from Hard-Pass 22.3</ref>

History

Part of the material was taken from a Path called the Stuck In Place, which was hypothesized to be the remains of a dead god that became Lost in the paths and decayed into metaphysical "tar".<ref>Antlers leaned over, looking. “Miss said the Stuck In Place was once a god or something, dead, and the Lost mess clung to the remains of the god or something. And it became tar. And realizing that was part of the riddle of where to go and look for clues.” - Excerpt from Wild Abandon 18.z</ref><ref>Miss explained, “I believe a great power once found itself on the Paths, after a slumber so long it even forgot itself. It withered and died while trying to waken, and this collected around the bones. The fields around here are… they were black, for you, so I would say they are akin to tar, thickened by what sloughed off when that great power died, and when others were drawn in and couldn’t find their way out. If they’d been the color of wheat, I would have called them quicksand. If they’d been white, I’d have called them a quiet, ongoing avalanche, unwittingly burying the unwitting.”

“Tar for short, though?” Avery asked. She couldn’t even see it now.

“Yes. That tar represents forces that pull downward, even if you’re on other Paths. And if you’re unwary here, a building may settle somewhere beneath that tar with you in it, or something may change and leave you stranded. Subtle strings of it may tie you to things in the environment, and then when those things or the buildings relating to those things move beneath the field of tar, then you would move with them.” - Excerpt from Gone and Done It 17.11</ref> Presumably there is an incongruous poster in one of the rooms of the Stuck-In-Place that one could puzzle out and lead to kennet.<ref>Jude [...] shook his head. “When this kicks off, after, there’s going to be something left behind, isn’t there? A connection between here and your town?”

“Anatopistic,” Miss told him. “It would be something representative of Kennet. A way out, not fitting the scene it’s in. Very likely in that main room down there. A poster of a man skiing, perhaps.”

“I was going to offer, you know, you leave, I’m here a bit, guarding things with Miss, dressing up and empowering the ritual, so it’s all secure, things are steady, they’re easier. Just like we were going to do. But part of that was me having to go home, get yelled at about Luca, tell people after, right? But maybe instead I could come to your town, through that poster or whatever. It’s easier, you’re already trusting me a lot. And I kind of wanted to see. Then I’d call home and see if I couldn’t get a big Garrick airdrop of Finders onto the situation. Obviously not easy, depends on a lot.” - Excerpt from Gone and Done It 17.11</ref>

Created by the Kennet Trio and Miss with major theoretical support from the Garrick family, technical assistance from Zed Sadler and a Soul battery taken from Theodora Knight.

Its initial existence was bloody but having settled in it has balanced and stabilized Kennet and kept the Undercity from usurping it.

Close to eighty practitioners were trapped there but they filtered out over the later weeks.
