Verona adjusted her bracelet, then jogged the rest of the way to Avery’s house.

She showed Lucy.

Evolution[edit]

Becoming a city spirit has vastly expanded her capabilities.<ref> - Excerpt from Left in the Dust 16.5</ref> She should have all abilities of Ken and damage to her damages Kennet.

She can rearrange and shift the structures of Kennet,<ref>Fences and gates protecting nearby properties began to move.  The dog barking intensified.

“Careful!”

“Got a mind like an alchemist’s workbench, stuff on the back burner…”

“Focus, god, please, Verona.”

Dogs were let out of yards as fences ceased to enclose those yards.  One was leashed to a clothesline but the clothesline was attached to the house, and the place it was attached to was moving along the siding, no cut or furrow left behind it, just a huge metal hook with a wheel attached to it.  It stopped short of actually reaching them, barking and choking as it pulled the line taut.  They hurried to the left.

But another dog was pacing forward, growling, hackles up, stopping halfway across its lawn.

It’s like that retro game Declan played with Declan and Declan, Avery thought.  Badass Mormon or something.  Going door to door while dodging dogs, manhole covers, paperboys chucking papers at your head…

It’s like a path.

She grabbed Lucy and Verona’s hands, pulling.

There are rules.

The dog on the lawn lunged forward.  Verona awkwardly grabbed at a spell card, using left hand to reach into her right-side pocket.

“Don’t.  Shouldn’t need-” Avery started.

The dog stopped on the edge of the lawn, howl-barking.

On their right side, a dog that was chained to a stake in the earth lunged forward.  The stake it was chained to moved along the lawn, same as the clothesline pulley had, with no furrow or anything.  It stepped out onto the road, out ahead of them.

Lucy was closest, and Avery steered Lucy away, watching, watching-

The stake stopped moving.

Go.

She pushed back against Lucy, putting Lucy on a forward path.

If Lis was the driving force behind this, then Lis had made promises not to hurt them. - Excerpt from Summer Break 13.13</ref> and can now cut the power and internet to certain parts of kennet.<ref>He was buying time for the program to finish compiling.  Lis reached out into the nerves of the town, then, simultaneous with standing up, cut the power and internet. - Excerpt from Wild Abandon 18.y</ref> Conceivably if a place has a connection to Kennet she can facilitate travel there.<ref>“We’ve got family here.  I don’t think they’d budge.”

“Lis.  The city spirit,” Louise said.

“There’s a thought,” Yiyun said.  “Reaching out, maybe a move to another location?  She can link to places tied to Kennet, can’t she?” - Excerpt from Go for the Throat 23.8</ref>

Chronology[edit]

Origin[edit]

She manifested in an all-girls school in Quebec, arising out of the backstabbing, sabotage and bitterness that infused the school.<ref name=past/> She worked to turn students and teachers against each other, some of which died as a result.<ref name=":1">Lis manifested in an all-girls private school in Quebec and she came out fighting in her own way. The climate she arose in was one of backstabbing & sabotage & bitterness and she blended into that crowd and poured fuel on the fires. From day one she turned student against student and teacher against teacher and lives were lost. Two groups of witch hunters banded together to try to sort through the mess and the three hundred students in attendance and she joined the collective witch hunters with each group thinking she was a member of the other. She blended in with the staff of the motel where they were staying when they weren't investigating & acquired keys. Then she quietly and methodically went from room to room to where witch hunters were sleeping and executed them. Excert from New Other correspondance #2</ref>

When two separate groups of Witch Hunters came to investigate she managed to kill both groups by pretending to be apart of the other group.<ref name=":1" />

She was injured during the ordeal and escaping gave her time to reflect on what had happened. She killed so many people that she gained Self.<ref>They killed a motel staff member out of paranoia before injuring Lis & driving her away. She remained in the wind for some time after and I think that was the break she needed to start thinking straight. Except from New Other Correspondence #2</ref> She now claims she is a different person.<ref>Yeah. I was a different person then. Excerpt from Shaking Hands 9.1</ref>

After the fall of the perimeter Lis was invited in keep an eye out for danger but actually spent a lot of her time spying on Avery, Verona and Lucy.<ref>She was pretty sure it was Lis again.  Lis’s whole job was supposed to be keeping the perimeter clear, but it sure felt like Lis was devoting most of her energy to keeping tabs on the three of them.

It was starting to feel more dangerous, the way Lis lurked.  That it was lasting this long, that it was this intense…

Verona adjusted her bracelet, then jogged the rest of the way to Avery’s house.

Lis peeled away.  The bracelet went still.- Excerpt from Dash to Pieces 11.9</ref>

As part of their plan for arresting Maricica Lucy, Avery and Verona confronted her but she fled instead. Whilst trying to escape she dropped a note attached to a flowering weed but warned her accomplices that Cig was caught and that she would be next.<ref> The weed lashed out, snapping, with petals curving to bite into her fingers like little blades.  Roots curled and curved, reaching, grappling with her fingers, and grappled with the paper, tearing it, destroying it.  Lucy jumped back about a foot, but Verona was able to hold out, miming a wince.  She hadn’t thought the initial effects would hit her this fast, and she didn’t want to give anything away.

She managed to get some.  She straightened, her hand bleeding, but again, not feeling any particular kind of pain, only more hollowness and a taste in her fingers that begged for something else to replace it.

She showed Lucy.

Cig caught, I’m probably next.

Got a glimpse.  They’re lightly armed but their bags are heavier than usual.

There was a partial third line, but the paper was badly torn.  Only part of a capital A was written there, the lower case letters were too short to appear above the tear.- Excerpt from Dash to Pieces 11.13</ref> The trio eventually managed to stop her using a curse that befuddled her senses but Maricica removed it.<ref>Lucy and Verona backed away swiftly as Lis fought off goblins and Snowdrop, and then Lucy found her footing.  She darted around and slapped a paper to the back of Lis’s head.  An enterprising goblin taped it there, encircling Lis’s head with tape.

As she changed form, the curse remained there.  And so did Lucy’s working.

Lis was down and out.  The working was there, trapped under tape and paper.

So tempting to interfere with.  No doubt, the intent was to set something on Lis that Maricica would wnat to deal with and remove, only to get the rock with the removal.  But the rock and the effort put into it was almost more tantalizing, especially if she could find a way to pass it back with some modifications, a bit of glamour, a bit of story.

Maricica’s face loomed at the top of the grove, but more subtly, Maricica reached out to Lis with one dark insect limb.  Lis saw her.  For all that she was being accosted by goblins, the curse rippling behind her eyes, befuddling her senses, she saw Maricica and knew she didn’t have to worry. - Excerpt from Dash to Pieces 11.z</ref>

The next time she was seen was after the start of the contest for the Carmine's throne, attempting to turn herself into Ken by transforming into the average of everybody in Kennet, using a goblet of Brie's blood to power the transformation.<ref>- Summer Break 13.12</ref>

During the fight to prevent Charles entering Kennet Arena Avery forced her to surrender and promise not to interfere for the rest of the night.<ref>“Swear.  The surrender.  You can’t go back-”

“I swear, for tonight, I’m done.  I’ll lower all obstructions, I won’t interfere further.  I’ve played my part.  I-”- Excerpt from Summer Break 13.13</ref>

She was successful at supplanting Ken.

Red Days[edit]

She only met with the kennet trio again after the Carmine Exile Gainsaid them. she returned The House on Half Street to Verona then.

The local judges gave Verona a glimpse into Lis' past when Verona made a demense claim on the house.<ref name=past>Girls in black sweaters with badges on the breast and plaid skirts were gathered on the landing of the stairs.  There were twenty of them, of varying ages.

“I don’t know who told you that, but it didn’t happen like that,” a girl said.  “Be a bitch, fine, but don’t be a dumb bitch.”

“Oops,” a girl told her.  She put a hand out.  “Maybe I’m a clumsy bitch.”

Pushing the first girl down the stairs.  It was a long flight- the school was huge and elegant, and the ceilings high.  Thirty or more stairs.  She didn’t stop tumbling until she hit the bottom.

Oh my god,” one of the girls whispered.

The pusher wheeled on her.  “Everyone agrees she deserved that.”

There were no protests.  Some nodded, others murmured agreement.

One girl in the group met Verona’s eyes.  Lis.  Or a replication of Lis.

“She’s not heading the ritual,” Verona murmured.  “You’re off base.”

“She’s Kennet.  She gave you the house,” the Alabaster Doe replied.  “She’s more a part of the ritual than most.” - Excerpt from Left in the Dust 16.10 </ref>
