The Other variously known as Renleotodroy, Renleoroytod, Todroyleoren, and Hans, is one of Abraham Musser's stolen Familiars.
Personality[edit]
Noted to seem especially docile for a Bogeyman, if indeed that's what they are.<ref>“Abyssal, yes.”
“Bogeyman?” Lucy asked.
“I don’t know. I’ve been wondering. I don’t know enough about labels. Bogeymen lean aggressive, feeding on fear and anger. They’re often restless. If she’s a bogeyman, she’s the most docile, least aggressive one I’ve ever seen.” - excerpt from Summer Break 13.4</ref>
Description[edit]
Four children stacked inside a coat. Functional adult-sized arms somehow occupy the sleeves. They will take off the coat and re-arrange themselves depending on which one's expertise is needed as the "head", each carrying their own equipment inside when not in command.<ref name=":0">“I want Hans’ knowledge of blood.”
They shrank back into cover as the Abyssal Other looked around, then fell forward, arms catching it as the woman nearly faceplanted.
The coat and apron came undone, and the Others practically crawled over one another to rearrange. One shook out a coat, while others bundled up the raincoat and apron.
The girl, about four feet tall, eyes so shadowed by a deep brow that they couldn’t be made out, took the spot on the ground, rolled up apron and coat at her shoulders to cushion the weight as another sat on her shoulders, another on top of him. A boy with a strong jaw and messy dark hair took the spot on the top before pulling the long suitcoat on. Hands buttoned it up.
None of them had had arms long enough to fill the long sleeves, but arms nonetheless did fill the sleeves of the coat, a large set of man’s hands extending out the ends.
One held a knife, scuffed and rusty, which it played with for a second, the other a battered and crumpled bowler hat, which it shook out to fullness and firmly set on his dark-haired head. - excerpt from Summer Break 13.4</ref> Together, they stand taller than their master.<ref name=":1">She assessed one figure, who was taller than the rest, Musser included, and stood at an odd angle, stooped, as if her back was a bit broken, arms hanging limp at her sides. Her hair hung down on either side of her face, masking her features, and she wore a long black raincoat, black apron with leather strings, and a surgical mask. With the Sight, she saw… different things. The figure was heavily stained, making the black of the raincoat swirl like black water had blacker ink in it- and the way she stood was a little bit clearer, especially with knives and broken blades stuck into the raincoat, making it sit in a different way. She could see the outline of heads and shoulders, a quarter of the way down and then halfway down. She could guess, based on proportion and how short the legs seemed beneath that coat. “I think four child sized Others wearing a raincoat and aprons. Possibly Abyssal?” - excerpt from Summer Break 13.4</ref>
"Hans" has a strong jaw and messy dark hair, an incredibly deep voice; when he is in control, they wear a "suit-coat", hold a rusty knife and he wears a battered bowler hat on his head.<ref name=":0" />
One of them is a girl with a proturding brow, eyes sunken in shadow, and long hair, about four feet tall. When she is on top, they wear a raincoat with an apron over it,<ref name=":0" /> both of them black, and her face is covered with a surgical mask.<ref name=":1" /> This is their physician form, Todroyleoren or possibly Renleoroytod.<ref name=":2">Nova had been poisoned, something leeching into her shell from a goblin weapon, and it made using her divine powers hard, but all Abraham had was a smashed knee and a nosebleed. He sat himself down, motioning to Etriken, while Renleoroytod approached, hiking up his pants leg. Syringes were handed up to the doctor by little hands further down in the coat and aprons, and he injected the fluids into the knee.
The doctor put him right in about two minutes, while Etriken set about fixing the blast damage, replacing the pillar, and cleaning up the debris, which took roughly ten. - excerpt from Gone and Done It 17.z</ref>
As "Rentodleoroy", they wielded a cleaver.<ref name=":3">Todroyleoren shuffled positions to become Rentodleoroy and severed a limb with a swing of a chef’s cleaver. [...] Rentodleoroy picked up the severed hand and bit into it, tearing it like it was jerky. - excerpt from Gone and Done It 17.z</ref>
Abilities and Art[edit]
As four children stacked in a coat, they are physically very flexible but have short legs.<ref name=":4">Todroyleoren was here, however, in his doctor’s guise. Four figures in one body, wrapped in a trenchcoat, agile in small movements, almost sinuous, but short-legged.
Subtle, quick, deft. He got six cuts in before the Dog Meat even realized he was being cut. Stitches removed, so skin pulled apart, scalpel-fine severing of tendon. - excerpt from Gone and Done It 17.z</ref> They rearrange who is at the top to change between their different focuses, which also appears to rearrange their name. This can apparently be done fast enough to switch modes in the middle of a fight.<ref name=":3" /> John Stiles speculated, from the way that they were treated by the others and the fact that the appearance-focused Musser would choose them at all, that they might be the most dangerous of Musser's familiars as well as being the most versatile.<ref>“Each ‘head’ with a different capability, perhaps,” John said. “I think that may be the most dangerous of the four, even if you ignore how versatile they are.” “Instinct?” “Informed instinct. The way they’re treated, the way they move…” “The fact they’re kinda ugly and he seems to like pretty and neat looking Others?” “Yes. I didn’t dwell on that point.” “So they’re apparently the most powerful-” “Dangerous, out of this quartet, possibly excepting the practitioner.” - excerpt from Summer Break 13.4</ref>
As Hans, they displayed an exceptional "knowledge of blood", able to deduce things from the traces of blood in an area.<ref>“I want Hans’ knowledge of blood.”
[...]
“What do you see, Hans?”
“It’s everywhere,” the boy replied, with a voice deeper than Bluntmunch’s. “Washed away by rain and time, but I see it. Death by five thousand bites.”
“I think that would be the Devouring Song they wanted me to help with.”
“They’re bound.”
“Alexander and Raymond managed the binding.”
“They’re talking about the Choir being partially responsible, being bound. This Other can apparently figure out a lot from looking at old blood patterns.”
[...]
“Drip, drip, head lowering slowly, look at the timing… she wasn’t here that long.”
“Muttering to himself, but it’s about blood,” Lucy told John.
[...]
“Hans?”
“The local Others, ones we met, they were here shortly after it died.”
“Can you track them?”
“I can track where they went after, but not before. You could ask Rabbit Killer.”
“Leave him be.” - excerpt from Summer Break 13.4</ref>
As Rentodleoroy, they were able to sever the limb of a Dog Meat with a cleaver and eat it.<ref name=":3" /> It's noted that one of their forms can cook,<ref>Renleotodroy provided expertise on other subjects, with food preparation being one and medicine being another, to diagnose whether Nova was required. In a pinch, he could do a fine job in a fight, or for an assassination of the less defended. - excerpt from Gone and Done It 17.z</ref> probably this one.
As Todroyleoren and possibly Renleoroytod, they were a master physician; able to slice into an enemy so subtly that they didn't notice,<ref>Todroyleoren was here, however, in his doctor’s guise.
