Eliana Graubard is a Dollmaker, Enchanter and guest teacher at the Blue Heron Institute.
Relationships[edit]
She threatened to turn her daughter, Talia, into a doll if she didn't live up to her expectations. To avoid this fate Talia secretly awoke and took the doll, Effy, as her familiar.<ref>“My mom made Effy on the day I was born,” Talia said.
...
“She said if I wasn’t satisfactory as a daughter, Effy would drag out my guts, put them inside herself, take my blood and skin to seal up the doll joints, and replace me.”
...
“The way a canopic doll works, especially if it’s raised alongside someone, given a birthday every time I had a birthday, with parts replaced to match my height and shape and stuff as I grew up, ummm, when it harvests, it can become human, after. She could become me. I awoke on my own, secretly, then I talked to Effy, and neither of us were sure if my mom would keep me or Effy. So we agreed she’d be my familiar. That way my mom would have to keep us both or destroy us both.”- Excerpt from Leaving a Mark 4.7</ref> To punish her Eliana used an enchanted music box to prevent her from moving whilst it played, dispite this abuse Talia still defends her.<ref>“My mom used to use this box on me if I threw tantrums, or if I crossed a line. My familiar hated it because she’d have to dance along, back before she was a familiar,” Talia said. “If I got two hours to watch TV, it meant two hours, and if I went a second over, then I’d have the same two hours with the music box, which usually meant a cold dinner, after.”
“I think we’re well aware of how horrible your mom is,” Hadley said. “Poor you. Come, sit.”
“I don’t think I will,” Talia said. “And my mom is not horrible. I have a roof over my head, food, education, practice, and opportunities, thank you,” Talia said. The reply sounded automatic.- Excerpt from Gone Ahead 7.8</ref>
She turned her other daughter, Shay, into a canoptic doll. The more she obeys the family the more human she becomes.<ref>“You’re a doll?” he asked, quiet. “Organ-stuffed?”
“In essence. Canopic doll.”
“Yet you can practice?”
“The organs are still there. The brain. Floating aimlessly within a soup of blood and other fluids. I am still Shay Graubard, but as a doll, I am obliged to follow the orders of the family that jointly crafted me.”
...
The longer I obey and the more grace I’m granted, the more I earn my physicality. The seams grow fainter, the signs harder to see. I used to have ball joints instead of shoulders and elbows, hips, knees, and ankles.- Excerpt from Gone and Done It 17.x</ref>
She got into an argument with Fernanda whilst teaching her, eventually gainsaying her.<ref>Mrs. Graubard was taking her time getting around to them. It looked like she was stuck with a spoiled brat, who Verona judged was about the same age as the three of them, but acted younger.
“That would be Fernanda,”
...
“I’m sure I’ve given you more than five minutes at this point.”
“That’s gainsaying, right?”- Excerpt from Leaving a Mark 4.9</ref>
She has a cousin and rival in Venice.<ref>Then, hm, Venice to meet a rival cousin of Graubard in dollmaking enterprises. Some background decisions being made there, about whether the Blue Heron network would keep Graubard or favor the cousin instead.- Excerpt from False Moves 12.z</ref>
One of her ancestors were sold to Gnarlings to make cursed items for them.<ref>My mother was traded to a Gnarling as a slave to make things for sale, in a wayside realm where Others hid, somewhere between the Faerie and Earth.- Excerpt from Bedtime readings</ref>
She would give Alexander a gift for his birthday or christmas every year, the dollhouse was one such example. She would use these get closer to Alexander.<ref>The board in front of him was a gift, Eliana Graubard to Alexander. It was one of several entreaties, as Alexander had framed them. She’d given at least one a year, around a birthday or winter holiday, and in the last few years, she’d offered to collaborate. A mixture of augury and modeling. This board. The dollhouse.
Which was genius, really. Because Alexander loved collaboration even more than he liked having powerful magical tools, and because it gave Graubard what she wanted. A chance to move in closer, to see and study Alexander. Eliana and Alexander would never have worked, but if Alexander had had but a single chink in his armor, Graubard would have suggested him a partner who would insinuate herself into that chink. A carefully crafted Graubard daughter or cousin.- Excerpt from Gone and Done It 17.y</ref>
Appearance[edit]
She has shoulder length brown hair, straight bangs, stark makeup.<ref>Mrs. Graubard looked like a doll, shoulder length brown hair that turned inward at the shoulders, straight bangs, stark makeup, and conservative, starched clothes.- Excerpt from Leaving a Mark 4.9</ref>
Abilities[edit]
She's an expert at Dollmaking, she's also experienced with curses and cursed items<ref>“While I’m a specialist in dollmaking, I’m very good at handling cursed items and curses,” Graubard said- Excerpt from Crossed with Silver 19.16</ref> and knowns basic alchemy.<ref>“Ray teaching Realms, Durocher teaching Practical Language, and Graubard’s still around, doing some tutorials on basic Alchemy. Not her specialty, but she’s grounded enough to cover the basics, and she’s not a bad teacher.”- Excerpt from Cutting Class 6.1</ref>
Chronology[edit]
She supported Bristow in his struggle against Alexander, meeting with him privately to discuss the trio.<ref>Some practitioners named Graubard and Bristow were talking about us and about Kennet. I think they might be digging for info, separate from Alexander. You know them?”- Excerpt from Leaving a Mark 4.7</ref>
She came to Kennet when Musser attacked it<ref>- Gone and Done It 17.x</ref> and got stuck their with after the creation of Kennet Found.
Accompanied Musser, Durocher and Hall when they went to scout out Kennet.<ref>- Crossed with Silver 19.16</ref>
