Threshold of a realm.

Every realm of the Judges was typically marked.  A bloodied animal for the Carmine domain, a doe or white furred or white-feathered beast for the Alabaster.
The threshold here was marked with ornamentation.

They preside over large areas, but only the parts where there is no clear hierarchy (i.e. no Lord), or when the existing hierarchy fails to cover a needed role. Some Practitioners see them as a placeholder for eventual Lords. Even though the Seat system is older then Lordship.
Sable marked in shadow

A judge's seat will pass on to a suitable candidate if they should die. Either someone can physically take their mantle from their corpse and wear it (e.g. skinning them of their fur and wearing it), a suitably confident candidate can step forward, or other judges can force the selection of a suitable Other in the region. There is a brief window after someone has claimed the role during which they can be defeated and replaced by a challenger.

This actually backwards from what we just established. Instead of getting powerful, having spirits move out of the way, and having rules start bending, there’s a kind of big, prearranged deal where the spirits and karma and everything will cooperate with anyone who takes the seat. So you don’t go from powerful to gradually becoming influential & having a demesne-ish space you carry with you, you take possession of the throne that’s the helm of this massive depression and you then get the power.<br><br>You don’t technically have to be strong to make a claim for the seat, but it’s hard to make a play for one of the fours seats if you aren’t.<br>[doodle of Cherrypop wearing a crown brimming with power]<br>Different types of power mean different types of influence in a depression. The Judges seem to have a lot of shallow influence over a wide area, and some major influence in terms of things they focus on: karma, deciding whether someone’s forsworn, the creation of new Others that they have affinity for, yadda yadda. A lot of this seems to be unconscious & automatic. The Carmine, for example, wasn’t with Charles & Edith when the Hungry Choir was made (or Yalda would have mentioned it) but she could still have influenced the outcome bcause of her reach over her territory.<br> [doodle of outline of something, with Charles saying oh no] - Excerpt from [12.7 spoilers] Knots and Depressiosn</ref>

While part of a system older then the seal most practitioners won't know about them directly unless the family practice specifically touches on them. It is in part a matter of culture.

The Aurum's seat has one of the highest turnovers.<!--
Zed clipped a clear cover over one of his station wagon’s headlights.  “The other part of this, I was telling Lucy before you guys were up.  There are parallels to draw here… the Aurum.  You’re after him, right?”

“Yeah,” Avery said.  She was helping to draw marks on Brie’s skin, who was sitting in the car, where it was a little warmer.

Zed clipped on the other cover.  “He is, in a way, both the person sitting in the chair with reach over an area, and the entity that moves very similarly to our hypothetical forking electricity elemental.  He defines his own zone, and he has his own preferences inside the zone.  The Alabaster makes a good contrast because technically, she’s the same.  But when you dig into it, part of the area she has Judgeship over is Nature, open space, and the places you go to in order to get away from it all.”

“And the Aurum is about the places you get away from,” Lucy said.  “His portfolio is the urban, tech, innovation, roads and factories, the human churn, fortune in the luck sense, fortune in the cash sense.”

“His weakness,” Verona said, “any Aurum’s weakness, is their inability to keep up.  It’s inevitable that society outpaces them.  Whatever foundation they’re rooted in, whoever they were, it anchors them some.  Past a point, it gets harder and harder for them to follow what’s happening.  Can’t go fast enough, but another Other can?  Get replaced.”

“High turnover,” Lucy said.- Excerpt from In Absentia 21.8</ref>

The Judges, also known as totems, fixtures, assumptive forces, seats, etc. are powerful Others who serve, singly or in groups, over an unclaimed and/or unrepresented areas. Each type of Judge is associated with a color.

Nature[edit]

Some consider them a type of spirit, but they also have some similarities to Incarnations (or Anima), and they don't naturally emerge the way spirits do. They are more than spirits, more than whatever they originally were, transfigured by their role.

They preside over large areas, but only the parts where there is no clear hierarchy (i.e. no Lord), or when the existing hierarchy fails to cover a needed role. Some Practitioners see them as a placeholder for eventual Lords even though the Seat system is older then Lordship.

A judge's seat will pass on to a suitable candidate if they should die. Either someone can physically take their mantle from their corpse and wear it (e.g. skinning them of their fur and wearing it), a suitably confident candidate can step forward, or other judges can force the selection of a suitable candidate (practitioner, Other etc.) in the region. There is a brief window after someone has claimed the role during which they can be defeated and replaced by a challenger.

Powers[edit]

Judges serve as a final "court of appeal" in matters of karma and regulate (both passively and actively) which Others of a certain type are present in an area. To be a Judge is to essentially "make the laws" for your domain. They also make certain that Others that manifest in their domain are bound by the Seal of Solomon and maintain Innocence or take responsibility for when it's lost. They can step into associated roles as needed, such as filling in for an associated Incarnation.

They also concern themselves with handling existential problems such as threats to the Seal of Solomon or breaches between worlds, they can also send people on quests to defeat the more dangerous Others, one example of this would be the Primeval that Ted Heavens was forced to defeat. They also act as a final court of appeal for forswearing.

They have power over certain types of people/Other, and can take them into service as minions or companions; against their will, with some expenditure of power.

Their appearance is variable able to take a variety of forms when necessary. While they generally wear the color related to their position they can look however they want.

Each judge has a domain, also called a throne, a little pocket dimension fitting their nature, generally (magically) requiring exactly a day's travel to reach. In a way their physical domain is an inverted Knotted Place as they cover a section of the real world where anyone can meet with them after a day's travel.

Reputation[edit]

While part of a system older then the seal most practitioners won't know about them directly unless the family practice specifically touches on them. It is in part a matter of culture.

Types[edit]

Alabaster[edit]

Alabasters are also known as Alabaster Spirits, Albino Kings/Queens, White Stags, and Innocent Lords.

They represent the fact that there is always someone who cares, that there is always an answer to any problem. They are generally flexible enough to fill in for almost any Incarnation, although some specialize based on what's missing from their region. One might approach an Alabaster to ask for insight about matters relating to innocence and children. She is also connected to ideas of the sanctuary, sanity and fine balance. They are a creature of protected innocence and curses can occur if someone tries to kill him.

Fae often claim the Alabaster role. Humans who take on the role often find themselves inadvertently transmitting their human flaws to their subjects.

An Alabaster's domain can be filled with white flowers, fruit trees, ruins reclaimed by nature, and white-clad innocents who have found their way there. People claimed by the Alabaster are offered relief from whatever afflicts them, such as mental illness, as long as they abide in peace. The ultimate fate of those who dwell with an Alabaster is often to willingly transform into raw material to fuel the domain (energy, plants, wildlife, etc.) If the Alabaster is slain, the innocents they protected may be twisted by their grief into dangerous Others.

The Alabaster of Ontario was the oldest Judge in the region, the Alabaster Doe, and later the Alabaster Assembly. She can manifest as a gigantic white doe or as a white-haired woman clad in furs and antlers. In China there is the White Tiger, said to appear when the emperor ruled with absolute virtue or if there was peace throughout the world.

Natural Alabasters[edit]

They occur spontaneously, and often (although not always) resemble white deer (with a secondary human form that reflects this).

Natural Alabasters have far-reaching cunning and the ability to steer and foresee events. However, they lack direct combat ability. Those who have claimed the role don't inherit this insight, but may have other powers of their own.

Draoidhe may draw on their power if they're friendly with an Alabaster and serve their goals, gifted regular small gifts and occasional dramatic workings to maintain peace. Alabasters will never willingly serve as familiars, but bound ones may be forced into the role, granting gifts and status to their master. Bound Alabasters tend to be greatly weakened, but still potent.

As a species, the Alabasters seem to be trending toward extinction, despite some preservation efforts. Some theorize that they are simply less numerous because "one day away" covers more ground with modern technology, however. While Alabaster can be judges, not all of them are.

The Carmine Exile, Judge of War and Violence

A Carmine handles monsters and those who kill monsters; justice in its most brutal form.

The domain of a Carmine is reached by traveling for a day and then following an animal seen on the edge of the road. It might appear as a blood-soaked clearing filled with predators, with plants appearing white by contrast with the blood, with a throne of bones.

A Carmine might take on killers, monsters, heroes, and villains.

The Carmine of Ontario was the Carmine Beast, formerly an Anima representing dangerous predators, she took over the position after the previous judge retired. The Chinese equivalent may be the Vermillion Bird, associated with fire but distinct from a Phoenix.

Aurum[edit]

The Aurum of Ontario was the Aurum Coil; associated with centipedes (probably due to their link with civilization in some Asian cultures), he generally manifested as a gold-clad male riding a giant golden centipede. He is connected with commerce and civilization and manages new rules of discourse like music, drama and modern forms of communication. He took over the position from the Aurum Dame, who took it from the Gold-Furred Mouse. The Chinese equivalent is presumably the Yellow Dragon, associated with earth, said to have given humanity writing and served as the first Emperor.

The Aurum's seat has one of the highest turnovers.

Sable[edit]

A Sable might fill in for Death if something important needed to die while Death was unavailable. One might approach a Sable to ask questions about death and one's afterlife. Thus they are connected to gates, both between realms and dreams which is part of the reason that an Other like Alpeana fell under the jurisdiction of the Sable.

The Sable of Ontario was the Sable Prince, formerly a powerful Spirit, he took over from the previous Carcass in Sable. He appears as a man in a black suit. The Chinese equivalent is presumably the Black Tortoise, associated with winter and tombs.

Azure[edit]

The Four Symbols of Chinese mythology are said to be the sort of Judges one might find there, or similar equivalents. The Azure/Green Dragon is one of the Four Symbols, associated with spring and the element of wood. Western equivalents do exist; an Azure Lady took over territory for the Aurum Coil possibly hinting at overlapping duties.
