An animate cigarette imaginatively dubbed Cig found its way to Kennet after the Barrier fell.

Personality

Given 'his' original as an object his personality is hard to detect.<ref>“And if we know Cig and Lis are part of this… according to Alpeana?” Verona asked Rook.

However he gravitates towards interesting people such as, addicts, criminals and world weary travelers, enjoys listening to stories,<ref name="NOC2">Motivations are hard to discern.  Cig doesn’t think like you or I might.  We have to infer from where it goes and what it picks out.  That it came here and seems to want to stick around.  It accepted the terms given without issue and has already taken to indicating desired votes as one of the new Others.

Cig seems to gravitate toward interesting people.  It doesn’t shy from addicts or criminals– just the opposite.  It also likes world-weary travelers and the rambling elderly so long as they have stories to tell.  It may be best to think of it less as an object and more of one or all of these types of people bundled together.  If they gather together and talk while sitting around a heaping ashtray then Cig is the old man/old woman/criminal/weary traveler/trucker/addict/teenager all tied up into one that is sitting & listening at the table with their cigarette lit but not yet smoked… with the person subtracted from the picture.

At the risk of injecting personality where there is none: Cig is nonviolent and passive.  An observer and “listener” rather than an actor.  It seems to prefer to avoid violence and sometimes remains behind after alerting us about potential threats. - [8.a Spoilers] New Other Correspondence #1</ref> so something of a people watcher listener.<ref>“Cig is the guy in the movie who’s always in the shadows, smoking, who knows a ton, tied into conspiracies,” Lucy said.

Relationships

Due to his nature and possibly his loneliness he was attracted to Edith and collaborated with her easily.<ref>“In a way, it was like coming home, she was warm, she had this natural way of drawing you in, at least for me.”

Abilities

Keeps an eye on Kennet’s perimeter and alters them of danger by burning a hole in a map, ouija board or list of names.<ref name=AO/>

Is unable to speak, but can communicate though weji boards and maps, or burning his lit tip. He may be stronger then Cherrypop if one goes by certain esoteric measures.<ref>“I’m not the weakest, he can’t even fight back!” she screamed the words, wrestling the unremarkable cigarette to the ground.  “Suplex!”

She suplexed the cigarette, rolling around in the scattered ashes, then cackled her victory.

Matthew had to rise, picking up his chair, with John taking hold of it so he could access the space beneath.

Cherrypop shrieked.  Not because of Matthew, but because the suplex had put her face against Cig’s burning end.  She let go and rolled around in the scattered ashes of the ashtray, holding her hands to the burn.

“Did Cherry just lose a fight against an inanimate object?” Avery asked.

Cherry shrieked more as Matthew picked her and Cig up.  He handed Cig to Edith.

Chronology

It has a non-violent and passive nature, preferring to listen than to act.

It has had two prior owners, a witch hunt that used him as an endless cigarette and an alchemist who’s workshop exploded. Cig received some minor abrasions as a result of the blast.

Became a citizen of Kennet after the perimeter fell.

He was bound by Verona when she tricked him into jumping to smoke she had released from a jar and then dissipated by opening another jar of clean air.<ref>Verona undid the cap.  Alchemy-created smoke billowed out of the container, and she held it high overhead.

“Come on, come on, come on.  Jump to the nice big obvious point of smoke…” Verona said, grabbing the other bottle.  She threw the first across the roof, then began unscrewing, watching Lucy.

Lucy, down by the shore, jerked her arm, giving it a sudden shake.

Burned down enough she had to drop him…

The cigarette appeared on the corner of the roof closest to Lucy and Lis.

Verona finished unscrewing the other cap.  The air was cleared.  All smoke in a wide radius was pushed away, including Cig’s.  He rolled a bit, then stopped.

She strode over, then drew a circle in the scant rooftop gravel and grit with her finger.  He rolled slightly away from her finger as she drew, but didn’t disappear.  She filled in the trench with poured chalk.- Excerpt from Dash to Pieces 11.13</ref>

Lucy, Verona and Avery interview him in a dream with help from Alpeana, they agree to let Cig go free in exchange for information about the conspiracy. Cig explains that they'll "paint the town red" and "turn things around on them", that “If they want to turn those poor saps out onto the streets, that’s fine, but they should also sort out the mess.”<ref>“We’ll paint the town red,”

“Turn things around on them,” the businessman from the near-beginning of this ‘conversation’ murmured, as he walked by, pausing near the stools the three of them sat on as people were gathering for drinks.  The barkeep looked like he wanted to go serve, but the old man that told the joke had a grip on his arm.  The businessman’s tone took on an intensity, his volume dropping as he continued to whisper, “If they want to turn those poor saps out onto the streets, that’s fine, but they should also sort out the mess.”- Excerpt from False Moves 12.4</ref>. Cig goes on to say that he only joined the conspiracy because he was lonely and because of Edith.<ref>“We’re all making concessions,” the man replied to the woman.  “We get lonely, and loneliness leads us to cling to even those people we don’t fit in with.  We compromise on our ideals, and a person we wouldn’t give the time of day to in another circumstance starts to feel like a kindred spirit.”

New Normal

After Summer came to an end Cig was released but the extent of which is unknown.<ref>Fall Out 14.1</ref><ref name=Parol>“It’s mine,” Melissa said.  “Kind of?  I got caught smoking this summer- got framed for smoking by a certain someone, and got super grounded, right?”

“Why do you say certain someone like it’s someone here?” Wallace asked.

“Someone we know,” Verona replied.  “Can call him Iggie, he’s an alright dude, weird, gets caught up in trouble.  Got imprisoned for a bit this summer.”

“Hey.”  Lucy elbowed Verona, who grinned.

“I didn’t know that last part,” Melissa said.  She thought for a second.  “Good.”

“Yeah,” Verona replied.  “He’s around though.  I think he saw Melissa smoking and when she hid her cigarette from her mom, he sorta snuck in and there it is, a cigarette lying there when mom passes by?”

“Oh damn,” Jeremy said.

“Uh, yeah,” Melissa said, looking uncomfortable.  She’d brought him up, maybe to put Lucy and Verona on the back foot, but now the table had turned. - Excerpt from Fall Out 14.5</ref>
