Magic Number
Certain Numbers have magical properties or symbolism associated with them.
0[edit]
A hollow circle or space, the Darkness Rune.<ref name=":0">Bonus Material: Binding and Countermeasures</ref>
1[edit]
Something of special importance - a single, central symbol with extra effect.<ref name=":0" />
2[edit]
Usable in certain Diagrams involving duality or pairs, such as a Host or other Vessel.<ref name=":0" />
3[edit]
Main article: Rule of Three
The first of the really significant magic numbers.[citation needed]
5[edit]
The number of the "Heirophant" Tarot Card, which represents an institution, often related to Incarnations.<ref name=":0" />
12[edit]
Like 3, repeating something 12 times can help it come true, with some Practice.<ref name=":1">“You keep telling yourself that,” Kass said. “At least twelve times,
maybe seventy-seven times. Maybe you should try gunning for one of the higher magic numbers, like one hundred and forty-four, put a little
practice into it, and see if it comes true.” - excerpt from Cutting Class 6.1</ref> (Perhaps because it's 3x4, so it's the rule of 3 four times over.)
13[edit]
Symbolises misfortune. The number of the "Death" Tarot Card, which represents transformation and rebirth, possibly but not necessarily literal death.<ref name=":0" />
15[edit]
The number of the Tarot Card "The Devil", which represents the "shadow self" and being bound. Also 3x5 so it can draw on the implications of those numbers combined.<ref name=":0" />
77[edit]
Like 3, repeating something 77 times can help it come true, with some Practice.<ref name=":1" />
99[edit]
3x33; the Rule of Three 33 times over. A pattern repeated 99 times is very hard to break, as with Rackspatter's 99 scalps from Practitioners who tried to bind him.<ref>“I don’t suppose you know where there are any superior goblins?” she asked.
“I’d be betraying my guests if I directed a practitioner their way.”
“Goes against the whole point, huh?”
“Yes. In theory, I could point you to a certain individual who betrayed my rules, Rackspatter of the Nine Thousand Scalps, but I wouldn’t be doing you a service. For one thing, he can’t be bound. If I remember right, ninety-nine of his nine thousand scalps are from practitioners that tried and failed. It’s like the rule of three, reinforced thirty three times over. At this point, it’s a foregone conclusion. You’d be the hundredth.”
“And he’d be over nine thousand,” she said. - excerpt from Signature 8.7</ref>
144[edit]
Like 3, repeating something 144 times can help it come true, with some Practice. One of the higher magic numbers.<ref name=":1" /> (Perhaps because it's 3x4x12, so it's the rule of 3 fourty-eight times over, or a twelvefold repetition twelve times over.)
