Gashwad is a goblin from Kennet. His name, "Gashwad", is an euphemism; his true name is not known.

Personality[edit]

Gashwad is very independent and does not always cooperate with the other residents of Kennet.<ref name="keeping-tabs">Gashwad: Fiercely independent, not Toadswallow affiliated, he does odd work but it’s a coin toss whether he’ll be on board or he’ll get crabby and tell us to screw off. Usually he’s down for a fight, at least. His real talents still lie in blasphemy and screwing up existing systems. Sometimes babysits the smallest goblins/sells weapons and services in the Undercity. - excerpt from Keeping Tabs, Kennet</ref>

Relationships[edit]

Unlike the other goblins in Kennet at the beginning of Pale, Gashwad is not one of Sir Toadswallow's students.<ref name=":1">Toadswallow pointed. “Over there, separate from my students, is… you can call it Gashwad. Cherry, dear, stop fighting or I’ll drown you in an outhouse.”
Gashwad was off with some of the Others, perched on the shoulder of the man with the questionable haircut who’d been called John. It had a nose like a toucan had a beak, and dark eyes that seemed stuck in a perpetual glare. - excerpt from Lost for Words 1.2</ref> He prefers to remain unaffiliated with the others, but will do odd jobs sometimes, and will also take care of the smaller goblins.<ref name="keeping-tabs" />

Appearance[edit]

Smaller than a human, able to perch on Bluntmunch. Has a huge, pickaxe-like nose.<ref>She could see the things in the bushes. Small, ugly, and twisted. Something she might have taken as a stone in the corner of her eye was a figure too lumpy and misshapen to be a person. Three other things were perched on him, one maybe a girl, tiny with red-stained skin, her expression twisted into a permanent scowl, then a fat one with what looked like nails sticking point-out from the inside of his belly, wearing a waistcoat and monocle, and a scrawny one with a nose like a pickaxe. - excerpt from Lost for Words 1.1</ref><ref name=":1"/>

Abilities and Art[edit]

His main specialty is "tainting things".<ref>Interview Notes 2</ref><ref name="keeping-tabs" /> He is exceptionally aware of entrances to the Warrens, allowing him to effectively teleport.<ref>Gashwad kept skipping ahead.  He was lying in wait now. “How’s he moving like that!?” Lucy called out. “There’s little paths and tunnels, if you’re tuned into the Warrens,”

Avery said.  “The place goblins come from.  Snowdrop showed me some.

Gash- gash seems to know most of them!” - excerpt from Out on a Limb 3.8</ref>

Chronology[edit]

Edith approached him to help with the conspiracy but he refused her offer and stayed loyal to the trio.<ref>“I know why you’re asking.  You’re wondering if I’m gonna turn on ya.”

“Are you?”

“Nah.  Nah, figured out what was going on, Edith asked, y’know?  Before you got her.”

“Did she?”

“Thought ya knew, catching her.  Nah.  She asked, but I figured it was too clever.  See, you ask a goblin like me to bash someone’s face in, and the person asking’s a goblin?  They’ll be all why haven’t you bashed that face already!?  Right?”- Excerpt from Summer Break 13.9</ref>

He rudely interrupted Guilherme's lesson with Lucy by walking in and killing the Immure.<ref>- Dash to Pieces 11.7</ref>

John gave Gashwad a knife as a parting gift.<ref>He switched his grip on it, holding the blade by the flat, and extended the handle to Gashwad.

Gashwad took it.- Excerpt from Break 2</ref>

Went to the Kennet Undercity with Cherrypop were he sold makeshift shivs in exchange for cigarettes and toilet paper.<ref>“Selling shivs.  Cigarettes or ass paper,” Gashwad told Verona.  He reached into the bag, laying four goblin-crafted shivs on the ground.- Excerpt from Fall Out 14.3</ref>
