Freeman Boyd is a technomancer that worked with Musser.
Relationships[edit]
Some of the people investigating Kennet's supernatural side online late became the St. Victors practitioners.<ref>Several of those people investigating are students at St. Victor’s. Have Freeman focus on those. He could even pass on his own knowledge. Make it worth his while. Some young technomancers. Learning city magic too, perhaps? And divine practices? We can waive the responsibility costs for looping them in.”- Excerpt from Wild Abandon 18.y</ref>
He's currently teaching Adrian technomancy. He gets annoyed about how helpless he seems to be and how he never seems to fight back. He struggles to impart his teaching into the boy.
Yiyun and Helen gave him advice about how to teach Adrian.
Appearance[edit]
He wears sunglasses as well as a long draping black coat with calligraphy on it with clasps at the neck and a Chinese style sleeveless tunic. He has long arms and legs and walks with a stoop, on his wrist he has a tattoo that says "PHREAK". He has greasy hair in a ponytail.<ref>The third really didn’t fit in, locally. He was a guy who wore sunglasses at night, with long arms and legs that, with the way he walked all stooped over, seemed even more ungainly. He wore a long draping black coat worn with the clasp connected at the neck. His arms weren’t through the sleeves, making the coat act like a cape, and the skin of the arms were tattooed with large letters in a calligraphy script. The one arm Verona could see had ‘PHREAK’ with a P at the elbow and a K at the hand. He was white, but had a sleeveless tunic that looked like it was Chinese, with the hard collar up against the throat, and the way the front folded over. A scraggly ponytail was set near the nape of his neck.- Excerpt from Gone and Done It 17.12</ref> He has ripped jeans and wears mag boots.<ref>wearing his long jacket with calligraphy on it, sunglasses, ripped jeans, and mag boots, hair combed back to a ponytail that was exaggerated in length here, spiraling around his body. - Excerpt from Let Slip 20.b</ref>
Abilities[edit]
He's capable of fending off the Turtle Queen<ref>“Quick important question,” Verona whispered. “Who do you think it is that’s fending off the Turtle Queen right now?”
“Guy with the sunglasses just told them to keep their phones on and charged. Might be it,” Lucy said. “Now he’s leaving. He knows he looks suspicious.”- Excerpt from Gone and Done It 17.12</ref> and has an alert system set up to warn him if she's attacking, dispite his best efforts she's gaining ground.<ref>A golden alert box suggested a system was under attack and had been for a bit- probably since he’d first called on the Lords. The Turtle Queen.
Like a dog with a bone it really didn’t want to give up on. Maybe she couldn’t.
...
He was going through them faster than he was able to take the time to set them up. - Excerpt from Let Slip 20.b</ref>
His sight turns the world into pixels and jpeg artefacts, creating square reticules and allowing him to zoom in.<ref>Spiritually, if he used his Sight to view it from another angle, it was a Carpocalypse Max desert, unforgiving, deceptively empty. The world devolved into artifacts, pixelated and blurry, clearer where he needed it to be clear. As he fixed his eyes on things, targeting reticules formed- squares framing them, then flickering as they adjusted zoom, clarity, and supplementary information. - Excerpt from Let Slip 20.b</ref>
- He's able to use city magic.<ref name=":0">In one of the cabins, the technomancer Freeman had taken a dozen cheap computers and phones he’d found and bought and dismantled them, screens arranged in a circle around a center screen. As lines appeared on each, Lis felt the spirits align with the city’s ebbs and flows. City magic, backed by technomancy.- Excerpt from Wild Abandon 18.y</ref>
- He can astrally project himself, drawing on power lines as a power supply.<ref>The arrangement that was astrally projecting them was drawing on the power in the power lines. - Excerpt from Let Slip 20.b</ref>
- He knowns how to temper items.<ref>Freeman, decked out in items with at least some magical potential, tempering, or things he’d worn enough they were part of his Self - Excerpt from Let Slip 20.b</ref>
- He's able to mess with security camera as well as watch things through them.<ref>One security camera, verified by the guy who absolutely has to be a technomancer. Probably watching or handling things on the outside, making sure we don’t get a rescue, maybe, Verona concluded. McCauleigh gets up to a vantage point the camera can’t see from, and tears out the wires. Feed dies, and the last thing on the camera? Avery running up toward the camera just before the feed stops, and Lucy and me around this one jerk who ends up injured.- Excerpt from Gone and Done It 17.12</ref> He can also help enable communications.<ref>“We’ve got a map, we can distribute that. Phones are out, so communication will be key.”
“Freeman can help us there,” Estrella said, indicating the technomancer with the ‘Phreak’ tattoo down one arm.- Excerpt from Gone and Done It 17.x</ref> - He's capable of pulling strings to manipulate law enforcement.<ref>He’s pulled certain strings with the law and the karmic pendulum relating to law enforcement is all set to knock his teeth out in the backswing, so he’s going to stay away. Phreak flutters in and out around the edges like a butterfly that thinks he’s a nine when he barely rates.”- Excerpt from Gone and Done It 17.12</ref>
Tools[edit]
- He's armed with a stun gun infused with spirits.<ref>Freeman pointed the stun gun at her, needles poking out, ready to shoot electricity through her. Spirits pulsed inside the weapon.- Excerpt from Wild Abandon 18.y</ref>
- He can draw diagrams using laser etching.<ref>The diagram his programs had been finishing was laser-etched into the center of the circle. The lines flared-- Excerpt from Wild Abandon 18.y</ref>
- He has a technomancy made generator.<ref name=":1">Every monitor flashed red with a fresh alert, alarms setting off, a technomancy-made generator in the corner screaming its way to life. Freeman, in the same moment, leaped to his feet, pulling out a technomancy stun gun.- Exceprt from Wild Abandon 18.y</ref>
Chronology[edit]
When he was younger he attempted to spy on a girl by installing a program on her PC but after downloading it he was attacked by another practitioner who stole his body.<ref>“I was hunted. Same way those things back there hunted us, but it was a person. I was a shitty kid on shitty sites. Watching shitty porn. Downloaded the wrong thing, as part of that.”
When he was Adrian’s age, he’d looked at voyeur sites, had gotten it into his head that he could put something on the computer of a girl he knew, to secretly tap into her laptop, watch through her camera, record, trade recordings for more good stuff on the forums. He’d downloaded the covert programs onto a thumb drive.
He left that part out.
“Shitty kid, shitty choice of something to download. Karmically bad, I guess. Made it easier for the practitioner who made the program to use it. I ran it on my own computer first. Diagram came up, couldn’t take my eyes off it,” Freeman explained, slumping further back against the tub. “Froze me there. He left me like that for a good couple hours while he got things ready. Then he came at me. Pushed me out of my own body.”- Exceprt from Let Slip 20.b</ref> His Self was swapped with the practitioners who attacked him and he found himself chain up in a cell, he managed to stop the sprinklers from destroying the magic diagram by blocking it with the mattress.<ref>“An astral body looking for a vessel is going to move like electricity does. It wants to ground itself. And the clearest, closest connection was the same one he’d used to get into my body and push me out. So I went along that digital corridor, through the screen, across the internet, and into his body. Which was three times as old as my original body, naked, chained to the wall of a prison cell with a bed, television, toilet, food, and water, collar and every means of escape secured with combination locks he knew the combination to, I didn’t.”
“How’d you…?”
“Sprinklers went off. I saw this big magic circle on the wall. Like the diagram I’d spent hours staring at. Because- stood to reason, right? If he wanted to wash it off the wall, I wanted to keep it. Something primal- some fundamental understanding, you know? Had to keep it. Had to keep it.”
“Makes sense.”
“He was careful. Everything about the setup was double-checked. The chain length, didn’t let me reach that wall. But I pulled the mattress off the bed, held it up, end pushed up against the wall and ceiling. I preserved most of it.”
- Exceprt from Let Slip 20.b</ref> He tried to fix the diagram and managed to send the practitioner back to his current body where he became a Horror.<ref>“I didn’t do the diagram well enough. It was still tied to him, drew on his personal power to pull him through, but the doorway- I did it wrong. It was broken. He came crashing into his body, and his Self was so torn up, it bent and broke his form. Broke other parts of his Self. It’s called a horror. Fitting name. You’ve talked to Harri and Helen about that stuff?”- Exceprt from Let Slip 20.b</ref> He floated back to his body though the Ruins as an astral spirit and evicted the echo that had possesed his body.<ref>made my way back the hard way. Same way we went from the power poles to this motel room. Dark and terrible. From the outskirts of Chicago to Morden Manitoba.- Exceprt from Let Slip 20.b</ref><ref>I basically crawled on my belly through shallow ruins for months to get back to my body. Found it occupied. Had to evict the tenant. Thankfully, only an echo. Thankfully, I had more claim, I just needed one victory, while she had to fend me off every time- Exceprt from Let Slip 20.b</ref> He went back to the room a few months later, the original occupant bargied with Freeman, giving him practice material in exchange for him killing him, Freeman agreed then double crossed him.<ref>“After a couple months, picked up my courage, made the trip back there. Room was the same as I’d left it. Including the man chained to the wall
...
He’d begged Freeman for mercy. Freeman had bartered for combinations to safes and side rooms, collected practice stuff, ignoring the body snatching things, then he’d refused the mercy in the end. Because he hadn’t yet awakened. He’d been able to lie.- Exceprt from Let Slip 20.b</ref>
After awakening he acted recklessly, eventually the local council forced him to stop.<ref>I was doing reckless shit, until the local practitioner council found me and told me to shape up and ship out. That they didn’t want the trouble I’d bring. I… shaped up.”- Exceprt from Let Slip 20.b</ref>
He helped out Musser when he invaded Kennet, getting trapped in with the rest of his forces.
He attempted to summon Lis,<ref name=":0" /> looking for her help with dealing with the Turtle Queen. He agreed to help her stop the paranormal side of Kennet from affecting it's innocents, to do this he agreed to trash a haunted arcade, help arrest Trinity Conway and bind the Countdown Cassandra, and investigate people searching for online rumours about Kennet's supernatural side. In return she agreed to give him access to an alternate network that allowed him to avoid the Turtle Queen.<ref>“He captured the Countdown Cassandra.”
“I’m aware.”
“Then why ask?”
“Tell me about the arrangement.”
“For that, I’ll give him access to an alternate network. It costs a bit of power, but he’ll be free of the Turtle Queen. They plan to ransack the Arcade in daylight hours when the most people are asleep. There are some magical items in there. I can give them a boon, city magic, to let them move and escape more easily within Kennet. Special doors that allow quick shortcuts.”
...
“People are out looking for magical information online. Freeman Boyd offered to interfere with them, stalling their access to practice, keeping Kennet more predictable. If they learned, there would be a chance they’d join the local practitioners.”- Excerpt from Wild Abandon 18.y</ref>
Afterwards he left the Carmine Exile's Domain.<ref>- Excerpt from Wild Abandon 18.y</ref>
He and Adrian helped disarm a car bomb returning the damage to the original sender.<ref>- Let Slip 20.b</ref> Whilst returning home Adrian strayed to far from the power lines and was attacked by typhlotic others, he managed to escape only after receiving significant damage to his Self.== References ==
