List of Incarnations

From Pact Wiki
Revision as of 18:22, September 22, 2022 by FossilLord (talk | contribs)

These are named or referenced incarnations within the Otherverse, Incarnate practitioners would deal in them. There are Greater incarnations that have other ones subordinate to but the difference between them and "lesser" incarnations are not fully explicated.

Anguish

Authority

Attired in purple and ensures that authority unchallenged.<ref>There was an incarnation of Authority about three and a half hours east, blunt featured, uniformed, dressed in purple, moving through crowds, invisible, subtle, and potent, just the same as Death could be a grim reaper, unseen, devastating, a touch unnoticed.  Authority did different work.
[...]
That spirit of Authority had once been two individuals, the old Authority, stiff and becoming mechanical as it lacked the ability to keep up with and adapt to the modern day, and a man in charge of a school, stern, loathed, old school, with people waiting for him to retire.  Just as bad at home.  The old Authority had come to him at a low point, offering a deal.  He had taken it, on the condition he’d be given the chance to bring his daughter to heel.  His words.

That made the bargaining harder.  Lis could invite him over, but he’d want to be close to his daughter and she wasn’t nearby.

If he did come, he could trample past those connection blockers, and he could make institutions into forces.  But asking and being refused was one of the wrong things she could do that would cost her.  Just like it had been when she’d been fighting Miss over Kennet found and the Carmine Exile hadn’t let her take the power she’d reached for.

It would be nice to have someone to talk to.  Authority wouldn’t be the nicest personality, but she could deal with that.  He’d at least be someone who had an experience a lot like hers.  Being one thing, taking a deal, becoming- - Excerpt from Wild Abandon 18.y</ref>

Bondage

Various agreements and constraints including but not limited to the physical.

Conquest

There is a Conquest in Toronto, about the strong overcoming the weak in turn.

Death

One of the Pillars of Human Existence, related others include Revenants and Ghouls.

Disaster

Subordinate to Fortune, one was incarnate in Ontario using a former practitioner named Ryan.<ref>Crossed with Silver 19.z</ref>

Discord

That which upset the harmony of things, anything, the Leonard family has connections with this concept.

Doom

In some dictionaries this is another word for fate, but in modern times taking on a much darker use.

Famine

Related others include Black dogs

Fate

One of the Pillars of Human Existence, the anima that deal with this are the Leathermen and Hangmaiden.

Fortune

One of the Pillars of Human Existence, the anima that deal with this are Leathermen.

Guilt

Another example of an Envoy, one version of it wears red gloves.<ref>A young officer embroiled in a case involving a series of grisly child murders got so caught up in the case and was so certain he had the right person that he fabricated evidence... and then immediately thought twice about it and went back to fix it.  In the aftermath, unable to sleep, drinking away his feelings, he missed his subway stop.  Emerging in a strange end of town, he was asked by an old man how he ended up there.  Still drunk, he admitted what he'd nearly done.

The old man ended up offering him a deal.  He'd name a crime and the officer would have to pick the person out of the crowd he felt was most likely to have committed that crime.  If he was so certain about the person he almost fabricated evidence against, maybe those same instincts would apply?  At first he didn't really care, but when he guessed correctly, the old man offered him a tip.  A piece of advice, something vital.  Until he believed.

All leading him up to the final contest.  One person in the crowd had perpetrated a notorious crime 15 years ago, still unsolved.  The officer, even though he'd been young, had all the information he needed to identify the face, even without his instincts.  If he got it right, the old man would give him what he needed to get the culprit of the child murders.  If he got it wrong, the old man would own him.  He reasoned that there was a chance that he, otherwise useless, could solve something that was wounding the entire community.  At worst, what?  He disappeared off the face of the earth?

He didn't get it right, and the old man with the red gloves revealed himself as an Incarnation of Guilt.  And the threads of the case began to snarl, and things pointed at the young officer.  So long as he cooperated, serving the Incarnation as a practitioner, people would look at him and wonder, but nothing would come of it.  If he failed, however, he'd be found guilty, and the real culprit would escape to harm others. - Wildbow on Discord</ref>

Hate

A powerful emotion, related distinctly to Hang Dogs

Hardship

Subordinate to Fortune, one was incarnate in Ontario.<ref>Crossed with Silver 19.z</ref>

Hunger

Subordinate or linked to famine, several examples with fertile ground to rise in even in north america.<ref>Verona was looking up famines and hunger in Ontario, especially Kennet.  Not much, but eleven point nine percent of households, apparently, had problems with being able to eat regularly, to the point it caused physical, mental, or social problems.
[...]
These things could be done by practitioners or by Incarnations.  Was there actual concentrated Hunger in the shape of a person, or Singing in the shape of a person, assuming that was how that worked?  If there was, then maybe there was one location or one event in Ontario where they were there, and they made stuff weird or affected a whole area with more singing or more problems with access to food. - Excerpt from Stolen Away 2.1</ref> Hungry Choir is one incarnate.

Hunt

The pursuit of a target or prey but not necessarily capturing it.<ref>“My best guess is this is Hunt,” Jessica said.

“Hunt?  As in-”

“The hunter distilled, seeking, tracking.”  She motioned with her hand, then dropped something else.
[...]
“Good thing about it being Hunt is it’s about the pursuit, not actually catching,” Jessica said.  “Same for Yearning.” - Excerpt from Vanishing Points 8.3</ref>

Imbalance

A pair of Envoys were used as an example.

Impulse

An example shows up with Impulse Wraith King which used a wheel as part of its iconography.

Inquest

Inquestion

Hypothetical example

Instability

Legacy

Likely subordinate to Death, an Envoy was used as an example.

Love

A powerful force that even Conquest acknowledges.<ref>“There are two kinds of taking,” Conquest said.  “When one gives love, love is not subtracted from a total.  Love can be taken a thousand or a million times over from the same individual, and that individual will not be bereft of love, if that love is genuine.  I am a taker of the other sort.  The sort to leave things bereft.  I ask you a second time, why should I value this as a gift? - Excerpt from Collateral 4.2</ref>

Nature

One of the Pillars of Human Existence, all animals including humans are linked to it as are Others like Stranglings.

Nescience

Weakened cognition.<ref name=N>Nescience punishes thinking and blunts mental sharpness.  Drawing on talent, teaching, learning and skill while in Nescience’s light is often foiled, with a chance of backfire, fizzling, or pratfall, as the case may be.  Those drawing on instinct or taking the simpler road may receive minor benefit.  Intensified, Nescience steals away talent, higher learning, and skills, and this can be permanent, forcing a hard journey to relearn it, if the target is in Nescience’s embrace for long enough. - Pact Dice: Incarnates</ref>

Pain

An inchoate version was seen, with a humanoid form of a woman with innumerable piercings while also being a cloud with the semiotics of "Pain" throughout its form.<ref>Verona knew that distant figure to be an Incarnation of Pain, just by the feel of it, and the shape of that mist and symbol. The symbol grew, the illumination reaching up through mist and cloud, and the distant figure went from being a young lady with bubblegum pink hair that was covered in piercings with torn clothes to a roiling cloud of symbols, all pertaining to pain: razors, barbed wire, broken glass, whips, reaching hands with broken fingers and broken nails, among many, many other things. - Excerpt from Let Slip 20.7</ref>

Parity

Focused on forms of equality.<ref>Verona nodded. “Law? Or something inevitable, maybe, like one of the pillars. More specific than Death or Fate. Parity?”

“No Parity exists in easy reach of this region, I could create it, but it’s easier to use Law. The Seal itself is a power source I’m closely acquainted with.” - Excerpt from Crossed with Silver 19.12</ref>

Pestilence

Discussed incarnation.

Poverty

Likely tied to Fortune

Quarrel

Likely subordinate or linked to Ware and/or Battle, but of course, a much more personal expression of such contentious feelings, an Envoy was used as an example.

Shelter

Spring

Subordinate and linked to Nature, used as an example of Envoy.

Strife

Used by Alexander Belanger may be linked or subordinate to War.

Venture

An Envoy that shows up in Ontario working under Fortune.<ref>The Wagering Man was another Envoy.  He wore a cap from the fifties, a suit jacket, and long coat.  Ryan knew less about him, only that he was an Envoy for Venture, who was an incarnation that was maybe fifty percent with Fortune, thirty-five percent Fate, and fifteen percent Nature.  He let people explore paths not taken, adventures they’d turned down.  But with rules.  Restrictions.  Don’t touch a dog.  Don’t be outside after eleven at night.  New rules each time they wanted to extend the deadline or adjust the reality.  And goals, to seal the deal, make the new reality real.  Get the girl.  Earn Dad’s approval.  Could they manage it, before they screwed up and broke a rule?  Or would the accumulated rules and paranoia around them ruin them? - Crossed with Silver 19.z</ref>

Victory

Helps those already winning and keep what they take, but can leave very easily.<ref name=V>Victory is capricious, and favors the person with the upper hand in a contest.  Victory strengthens the strong and makes the territory and successes of the person who has most recently succeeded that much more secure.  Intensified, Victory tends to bring confrontations to a quick close, empowering final blows. - Pact Dice: Incarnates</ref>

Wanderlust

...<ref name=W>Wanderlust is the restless drive to explore and to move.  Those in her area cannot stay still to work at a task.  Those in her area find moving faster and easier, but stopping to pause for more than a few seconds is not possible.  Intensified, she punishes those who backtrack and doubly punishes those who tarry.  Spikes may sprout from the ground to tear at the feet, or teeth may nip at the heels. - Pact Dice: Incarnates</ref>

War

One of the Pillars of Human Existence. Related others Dog of War. Can have sons, possibly panic and fear.

Yearning

...<ref>

- Excerpt from Vanishing Points 8.3</ref>

Youth

Likely subordinate to Life or Nature, an Envoy was used as an example.

Trivia
