Lauren Snyder is a practitioner with a fatal affliction.
Relationships[edit]
Lauren and Reid got along well in the short time they knew each other, after Lauren died Reid was angry that no one would know of her sacrifice.<ref>“Don’t disrespect that kind of death with your stupid- stupid- everything. She got dealt the worst- the worst hand, she dealt with it the best way. That matters more than anything I’ve done in my life, everything I’ve done in my life put together. So don’t fuck around. Not after that.”- Excerpt from Break 5</ref>
The Alabaster Doe offered to plant a flower in her sanctuary to remember her by.<ref>“The Judges would remember, at least.”
...
“I would do something,” the Alabaster said. “Planting a flower. Those I’ve taken under sanctuary tend to the flowers.”- Excerpt from Break 5</ref>
She meet both the Sable Prince and Alabaster Doe, the Alabaster offered her sanctuary but she refused.<ref name=":0">“You know the Sable,” the Aurum Coil told Lauren.
“We met. We talked.”
“And the Alabaster.”
Lauren ducked her head low. “I reached out.”
“You could have had sanctuary with me, Lauren Snyder,” the Alabaster told the woman. Lauren was bald, without eyebrows, but that was the least of the issues she was dealing with. Dark veins crept through every fold of her skin, her eyes were tired, her bones even more so, even for a young woman of twenty-two.- Excerpt from Break 3</ref>
Her father had a grudge with Alexander.<ref>“You didn’t attend the Blue Heron?”
“Family rivalries. My dad hates Alexander.”- Excerpt from Break 3</ref>
Appearance[edit]
Lauren has no hair or eyebrows and her skin is covered in dark veins.<ref name=":0" />
Abilities[edit]
She is bound to a familiar named Manu, a simple spirit poisoned by a sliver of something dark.<ref>Lauren Snyder had picked a familiar. When she couldn’t manage it, she’d bound it inside herself.
Now that her head was cracked open, it could crawl forth from her heart. A simple spirit given physical shape. Nothing complex, nothing overwrought. Something animal. The horror didn’t have the senses to see the particulars.
But inside the spirit was a sliver of something. It had bitten into something very, very bad, and that something had poisoned it.- Excerpt from Break 4</ref> Her tie to her familiar had caused her to lose much of her strength.<ref>“No. I don’t have the strength for a con.”- Excerpt from Break 4</ref>
She can not properly die, when killed her familiar is instead released from within her body. When her familiar is defeated it returns to Lauren, reviving her.<ref>“Manu is still a spirit, still feels, still doesn’t want to die. So it falls back if it starts getting too drained. If I die, Manu comes out, if Manu dies, I come out, but beneath it all, feeding it all, that flow of divine power that’s been forced to constantly flow. Keeps us alive, even if it doesn’t keep me very strong or well. I think it’d be satisfied to leave me withered, broken, and immobile, so long as it could keep drinking from the well. I’m hoping to avoid that.”- Excerpt from Break 5</ref>
Chronology[edit]
When she was fourteen she became a devout of a goddess, with access to her power. Now that her familiar became corrupted the goddess hates her.<ref>“Made a deal with a goddess back when I was fourteen, to serve her as a devout, to access a conduit of her power. Her power is my power. When things went wrong, that spike of darkness in Manu, my familiar… it stuck through some fundamental part of me and nailed something in. Can’t close the gate, can’t break off the relationship to my goddess, much as she wants me to- she despises me now. The darkness will leech off that power until my goddess dies. I’m not sure it stops then, either. It might keep the door open to… the universe, I guess.”>- Excerpt from Break 5</ref>
She joined the contests for the Carmine's throne, eventually fighting against the horror that used to be Michael Horst but before the fight could start she was shot by Francis. Her death caused her familiar to escape from inside of her. Michael was so horrified that he volunteered to be unmade.
After Michael died John agreed to fight against her alone, he managed to deal enough damage to Manu that it disappeared back inside Lauren. The contestants all agreed that you could be counted as defeated if you can no longer continue fighting.<ref>“Three agree, one against. If one contestant is unable to fight or declare themselves willing to continue for a long enough span of time, the match in question may be called,” the Aurum Coil called out, voice filling the Arena. “How long?”
“Five minutes,” the Sable Prince told them.- Excerpt from Break 5</ref> Afterwards he alternated between killing Lauren and killing her familiar for the next five minutes until she was defeated. The judges seal off the tainted sliver afterwards.<ref>The Sable Prince created a square of darkness in the floor. All three Judges worked to position the sliver above the door, then dropped it.- Excerpt from Break 5</ref>
