Lucas Olson is a man trapped inside the abyssal monster, Cagerattler.

Personality

He blames himself for failing his son Cole, he also worries as if he hurt this other sons by trying to help Cole.<ref name=":2">But if he’d been the type to take that opportunity, maybe he wouldn’t have been able to survive as cleanly as he had in that hellish place he’d been caged in.  He’d gone most of his life without hurting people.  Deliberately or directly, anyway.

He might have hurt his other sons by trying to save Cole.- Excerpt from Break 4</ref>

He has been down in the abyss for a long time<ref name=":1" /> and has forgotten much of his former life.<ref name=":0">He’d forgotten a lot, over the years, but the demeanor of the woman struck a chord in his memory.- Excerpt from Break 4</ref> He managed to survive it due to his non violent nature<ref name=":2" /> and the consistency he stuck to his own rules.<ref name=":3" />

He made a deal with Cagerattler agreeing that he wouldn't stop him being violent so long as it was directed against the right people.<ref>The deal.  He’d told Cagerattler that he wouldn’t fight the propensity for violence, so long as it was aimed in the right directions.- Excerpt from Break 4</ref>

Relationship

After giving birth to Cole Lucas's wife started to doubting both herself and hmi, causing them to argue. He has since forgotten much about her.<ref>Lucas’s wife-

He wished he could remember her name.

-had taken the pregnancy hard, had gone from being a mother who could parent three troubled boys in a way most couldn’t, to someone who doubted her every move, inexplicably.  Doubted his.  They’d fought.- Excerpt from Break 4</ref> After Cole was arrested the two of them seperated and she took her adopted children with her leave Cole with Lucas.<ref>Cole’s mother had left for her mother’s, taking the other boys.  Lucas had stayed, trying to help Cole, getting ready for their son to come back.  Because someone had had to.- Excerpt from Break 4</ref>

He and his wife adopted three troubled children, Ed, Norman and Cruz. Lucas struggled to care for the three of them and Cole at the same time.<ref>Lucas’ efforts to remind their three adopted boys that they were loved seemed to leave Cole wanting, but giving more time to Cole didn’t soothe the boy either.- Excerpt from Break 4</ref>

Appearance

A man trapped inside a skeleton, in a cage too small for him. with long black hair.<ref>There was a distorted skeleton with metal welded to bones that still had tatters of raw flesh on them, with a layered corrosion on the bones like bogeymen John had encountered from the deeper parts of the Abyss.  Some of that corruption leaked into the wood beneath its feet.  Bone and metal formed a cage and within the cage was a man, thin and too long-limbed for the cage he occupied.  Stooped, head bent low, long black curls falling into his lap, he held onto horizontal bars as best as he could.  His eyes were sweet.  He looked as pure as the cage was corrupt.- Excerpt from Break 2</ref>His right hand is manacled, rubbing against his hand till it scraped bone, as is his left foot, now effectively dead.<ref>His right wrist had a shackle on it, of the same material, and it had rubbed enough that there was barely any flesh, hard material grating against bone.  The hand was consequently weak, shot through with pain every second, more intense than if he’d slammed his funny bone on a corner.  His left ankle was the same, but the attached foot was mostly dead.  It didn’t inflict shooting pain on him, but instead it perpetually died, pumping toxins and weakness into his leg, groin, and lower stomach.

For all that, he was mostly pristine.  His skin would get scratched, then heal when he wasn’t aware of the pain anymore.  His hand wouldn’t die or rot off.  Clothes had turned to rags and fallen off, his hair had grown long, until it could touch his lap, and it wasn’t as greasy as it should be.- Excerpt from Break 4</ref>

Abilities

He is a pearl of the abyss and able to resist it's corruption,<ref name=":3">It hadn’t had enough leverage to get a grip on Lucas himself, maybe because of the way he’d been sent down there, but it could get its grips on other things...They’d found a kind of deal and he’d abide by it.  As with the raising of the three boys they’d fostered and then adopted, he had to believe in consistency.

Consistency might’ve been the only reason he hadn’t become monstrous in that monstrous place.  After his cage had started moving, started delivering him to scenarios that would test his resolve, he’d met an old man who’d been made part of the walls around him, like the cage had mingled with Lucas.  The man had said he was a pearl in the Abyssian depths, not directly corrupted.  There was little hell could deliver unto him that would beat what he felt inside.  A father that had failed his son.- Excerpt from Break 4</ref> because of this he is used by Cagerattler as a power source.<ref name=":1">“Focus!  It’s gotta be him, at the center!  He’s a power source.  Something old!”

They weren’t wrong about the power source.  They were wrong about Cagerattler being old.

He hadn’t been down in Hell that long, had he?  Cagerattler hadn’t taken that long to gather this strength, had he?- Excerpt from Break 4</ref>

Chronology

Lucas and his wife fostered three troubled boys then by accident conceived a fourth child, Cole. Lucus found Cole difficult to manage and Cole eventually got sent to prison, after being released he got into an altercation with a neighbour and ended up shot. Lucas went to find him but when he did his son and another practitioner sent him down into the abyss. Cole himself would fall down their as well in time.

He enters the contest for the Carmine's throne along with Cagerattler and whilst fighting the Witch Hunters asked for a test of judgement which he fails. After the Witch Hunters tackle Cagerattler it's revealed that it's heart is inside the cage with Lucas and that he could have killed it and escaped any time. Lucas decideds to surrended and him and Cagerattler are both destroyed. In the final moments it's revealed that Cagerattler was Lucas's son this entire time and that he could have left at any point but that he refused to leave him out of love.
