Gabe ponders his life, his friends and former career as a child actor. He doesn't like where is life is right now nor how he looks, though this may be due to some undiagnosed anorexia.
He reviews the Devouring Song website, thinking he's just reading some sort of online fiction as he clicks around. He decides it's just the type of made up game he could occupy himself with and clicks in. He is warped into a world he doesn't understand dragged by bleeding boys and gory girls into the town square. There he meets the other participants who are either already there or are being dragged there as it begins. Gabe helps with setting up.
It begins, they start singing and try to get through it. any stutter will invite a nibble. Then there's the issue of a ragging bull running around, they need to kill and eat it.
The Kennet Trio attempt to intervene in the ritual, but are unable to save several participants, who are killed by the conjured bull. The weeping women gets help though.
The ritual is winding down before Gabe sees someone vomit, which causes him to vomit. The children close in and he joins in their song and meal.
