Five weeks later, Verona stares down a faceless woman outside her house. After a brief argument with her father about the chores she has to do and the responsibility she has to him, Verona leaves to meet up with Lucy talking about the women they think the women are nervous about the whole ritual deal. They don't understand it.
They reach school and like children typical of they're age call up to Avery, their new classmate joining from homeschooling. She appears at the window and rushes down to greet them, then reverses course and returns to collect the other material for the ritual. They playfully give her a hard time and talk about school, relationships and apps.
The trio heads into the woods and meet Following it they meet with Matthew, Edith, the girl's Practitioner predecessor Charles Abram whose fallen on hard times, and an unidentified collection of Others. They reveal that the trio is to investigate the death of the Carmine Beast, regardless of whether they actually solve the case. There are exchanges within the strange group. Verona looks over the crowd of strange people who she can't quite identify, then something clicks and the Others take notice. Miss compliments Verona saying that the time it took for her eyes to "open" bodes well for her career as a practitioner. That her traits including skepticism and imagination will serve her well.
Charles interjects all but begging the trio not to go through with the Awakening. He talks about everything that could go wrong with what they're doing. He ends up being used as an example that he becomes a host for various curses and more. This makes a bit of impression on Verona.
Lucy acts on it, she makes the assembled others promise that they will protect her and her friends. That they won't keep them from living a long and fulfilling life. Moving forward they get out the supplies for the awakening ritual Each girl had made a hat, coat and mask with two of those being gifts for the other girl. These according to Miss will function as a raiment through which their power will work best through on top of being together.
Given a last chance to back out of things Verona confirms that the tro has to do this.
