Nicolette Belanger (having taken the name on joining the Belanger Circle)<ref name=":0">Nicolette Belanger
The most recent apprentice under Belanger, Nicolette took the family name as part of the deal. She survived the kind of Awareness that drives most into cruelest madness and emerged with Sight. A keen Augur and practitioner of Incarnate practices, dealing in omens and curses, she attends Advanced classes. - Bonus Material: Student Guide</ref> is an apprentice Augur at the Blue Heron Institute.
Relationships
She and Elizabeth Driscoll are friends, the two of them often had joint projects together and they would talk for hours whilst together.<ref>“Zed,” Nicolette replied, meeting Avery’s eyes. “And Eloise, a bit. Liz, some.”
“Elizabeth Driscoll?” Verona asked.
“Yeah. That was more of a work relationship. But it was… we could talk the entire time we were working and it felt like we could keep going for hours longer, but we didn’t, so I always looked forward to the next joint project. We found excuses to do them. I think it was the same with her.”- Excerpt from Gone Ahead 7.4</ref>
Appearance
She is 16 with straight brown or black hair.<ref name="4.5e1">Nicolette reached up to her ear, pushing her straight black hair back and out of the way, and gripped her earlobe, so the stud earring protruded. “He’s not listening. It’s just us.” - excerpt from Leaving a Mark 4.5</ref>
She wears a hairpin holding up her hair with white feathers in it. Her glasses have branches for arms and white frames. She wears pocket protectors for carrying quills and such.<ref>She had brown hair that was arranged so it all fell down on one shoulder, the rest pinned back by a hairpin with white feathers. She wore glasses with branches for the arms and thick, stark white frames that matched the feathers. Her blouse had a ruffle at the collarbone, and her skirt had a thin belt, pockets with a pocket protector and things slid in, including feathers and possible pens. She wore sandals for the heat. - Excerpt from Out on a Limb 3.2</ref> She sometimes wears a stud in one ear.<ref name="4.5e1" /> All of these have magical significance, see Tools below.
Abilities and Art
An apprentice Augur and Incarnate practitioner,<ref name=":0" /> giving her more offensive options than standard Augurs.
Familiar with the theory of runes and diagrams, especially as they relate to Augury; for instance, she knows a ritual diagram to send her undead creatures to an area and see through their eyes.
She has a hole in her skull from an injury some years ago, which acts as a natural Hallow. She developed some skills for dealing with spirits to handle it. It naturally fills with negative spirits and echoes without special attention.
She learned a spell from another coven that she believes can block even Alexander's power to see her.
Tools
Her hair-ornaments are ritually purified, so as to channel peaceful, knowledgeable spirits into the hole in her skull.<ref>By the time he was halfway down the hall, she could feel stirrings. The way a hallow was used by practitioners, it was often framed or treated in such a way that it invited only certain things in. Doing so limited the infighting and disruption within the hallow. She used her hair ornaments to frame the hallow, that hole in her skull, and ensure that the things that came in were peaceful, learned, and cooperative.
Right now, as she picked herself up, she didn’t put the ornament back. Instead, pain framed the hallow, throbbing where she’d been struck at a sensitive point, probably because he’d used that Sight to identify that point. Pain invited painful things in, which was already starting to make her see things, even without her Sight. - Excerpt from Stolen Away 2.z</ref>
Tapping the groove on her glasses lets her change between different types of Second Sight.
She uses jars of blood from different types of tragedy as a power source (currently used up), along with feather quills to write with them. She can use this to power practices, as well as to inflict the relevant fates on someone by pricking them.
She had a variety of Others she could see through, including twinned zombie animals carrying human-seeming eyes, a floating eyeball glyph, and an eye-stealing Collecter from the Ruins. Currently, all are destroyed or freed except for some Omens.
She owns a black stick she can use to curse people with, making them loss their possessions.<ref>Nicolette pulled a black stick out from within her jacket. Some goblins didn’t care. Others went still.
Nicolette pointed it like a wand at one of the ones who didn’t care, who wore a backpack and who was getting ready to throw a ball of soggy paper.
“Crack the Foundation, let gathered riches fall through,” Nicolette intoned.
The stick fractured. Dark shadows swarmed the goblin. The ball of paper was marked with dark lines like a crack on the ground, then exploded into wet clumps that showered the goblin.
- Excerpt from Left in the Dust 16.1</ref>
She has a diary which she uses primarily for planning out future appointments with Alexander Belanger.
Chronology
After Alexander and Bristow's destruction she became self-employed and is a competitor to Wye and his circle.<ref>“The other guys have mostly banded together, resuming the old business. But she’s now a competitor of theirs. She’s not huge, but doing the same sort of business. Investigating, supporting people like… well, like you three, who want to know what moves to make. And she gets paid.”- Excerpt from Left in the Dust 16.1</ref>
