The Sable Prince is a Judge associated with death.

Personality

Likes things to be phrased clearly and definitively.<ref>The Sable Prince liked definitive language, firm phrasings.- Excerpt from Dash to Pieces 11.4</ref>

Relationships

Alpeana worked with him.<ref name=":0" />

Edith approached the Sable to discuss what happened after her and Matthew died.<ref>“Not especially,” Edith said.  “But I made pilgrimages to the Alabaster, and to the Sable, and the Aurum came to me, at different points.”

“That’s a lot.  Why?” Lucy asked.

“I think because I’m naturally fragile and unstable.  This body stabilizes me.  But I needed some answers that other Others couldn’t provide.  The Alabaster for questions on innocents, and bringing a child into the world.  The Sable to talk about death, and Matthew and my exits from the world.  The Aurum came to audit.”- Excerpt from Out on a Limb 3.5</ref>

He helped prevent Yalda from raising again so that John could kill her.<ref>“He was there when Yalda died.  She would normally rise again in her own time, drawing on the tether that connects her to the war.  He secured her death.”- Excerpt from Dash to Pieces 11.4</ref>

Appearance

He dresses in a black suit, without buttons or tie, he has a trimmed black beard and long shoulder length hair that's combed backwards into sweeping locks. As he walks the plants around him turns to stone or ore and the grass splinters into black spikes.<ref>The eerie man in the black suit, black dress shirt with no tie or buttons, hair and beard black and barely tamed.- Excerpt from Leaving a Mark 4.1</ref><ref>Leaf turned to black stone, branches doing much the same.  Grass splintered, more like needles and blades that cracked underfoot.  Were it any other foot, they looked like they could stab through or slash neatly across flesh, but these footsteps hit ground as if the man in the black suit with the black dress shirt was an elephant, not someone resembling a human.  Hair was long and combed back in backwards-sweeping locks, and his beard was trimmed to the edges of the jaw and a goatee shape, sans mustache, the edges clean at chin’s edge, but at the extremities his hair was wild, curled, and dense in a way that threatened to catch at any hands or utensils that touched it.  His shoulder-length hair was similar.  More akin to a horse’s mane that became a bramble patch, but the same blackness and material from root to tip.- Excerpt from Dash to Pieces 11.2</ref> His shadow goes towards the light rather than away from it.<ref>His footsteps were a thudding drum beat.  His shadow, long, moved in the wrong directions for the light around them, as if there was a special, invisible sun directly behind him, casting a shadow only for him, to make it as stark and long as it was.- Excerpt from Dash to Pieces 11.2</ref>

Abilities

He's responsible for arbitrating karmic law, managing the seal and overseeing forswearing and gainsayings.<ref>“That is our purview.  You called us Judges, and this works as a term.  We manage seal and karmic law, we arbitrate the abstract notions of spirit and Other in most of our purview, depending.”- Excerpt from Dash to Pieces 11.3</ref>

As a Judge is represents death, the underworlds and gates, he acts as guide and a guide to psychopomps.<ref>“Because she is the prey animal, the victim, and is vulnerable, by her very nature, just as I am chthonic death, gatekeeper, guide and guide of the other guides and psychopomps of our reality, and the Carmine is bloody violence.”- Excerpt from Dash to Pieces 11.3</ref><ref>“We could do Sable again, but… I didn’t get the impression he’s super on top of the Fae thing.  He deals with death and gates.”- Excerpt from Dash to Pieces 11.8</ref>

If attacked he sets a price for his attacker.<ref>The Carmine fights back, normally, the Sable sets a price on his killing, and the Aurum makes it a contest.”- Excerpt from Dash to Pieces 11.8</ref>

Will often bring back a hero from death for one last attempt at completing a quest.<ref>“Yeah.  Often the Alabaster, for guidance, but sometimes the Sable or some other deathly gatekeeper will bring them back for one last shot.  Sometimes a lady in gold to give them a treasure, equip them for the final confrontation or whatever.”- Excerpt from Summer Break 13.1</ref>

He's responsible for nightmares.<ref>“Their scheming is happening in nightmare,” Maricica said.

...

“I could make a request of the Sable Prince, but making it mine would alert Alpeana,” Charles said.  He sat in Lis’s chair.  “Hmmm.”- Excerpt for Wild Abandon 18.y</ref>

Chronology

He was once a higher spirit.<ref name=":0">“No.  We saw each other once, fifty years back, but tha’s all.  Tha Sable Prince was tha one I worked with most.”

“Prince?” Avery asked.

“The titles suggest who they were before,” Miss explained.  “Were John Stiles to take the seat, he would be the Carmine Dog.  The Choir would become the Carmine Choir.  The Sable Prince was once a higher spirit.  Prince was the easiest title to give him.”- Excerpt from Stolen Away 2.6</ref>

He was present when John shot Yalda.<ref>He didn’t break eye contact.  If he had he would have seen the Sable.- Excerpt from One After Another 10.a</ref>

He appeared for the trial of Edith James, lending his power to help bind her.<ref>Lucy touched chalk to floor, and it sizzled, melting like crayon pressed to a hot pan.  She jumped, pulling away, and glanced at Edith.

But it wasn’t a trick on Edith’s part.  The chalk that had melted out extended out into lines, parallel to the bases of the walls.  It wasn’t hot, but solidified into a pattern like crystal inset into the floor, crackling like it was freezing.- Excerpt from Dash to Pieces 11.4</ref>

He let Lucy speak with John when she was doing the Alcazar ritual.<ref>The Sable raised his hand.

The scene went dark, except for Lucy and the Sable.  The man studied Lucy for a long moment, then disappeared, leaving her and John standing in Kennet, no Alabaster or Aurum present.  The Sable leaned in close to whisper something in John’s ear.- Excerpt from Summer Break 13.2</ref>

Helped set up the tournament to replace the Carmine Beast. During the tournament he warned Verona against barring the way.<ref>“Potential contestants shall not be barred passage to the building.”- Excerpt from Summer Break 13.12</ref>
