Left in the Dust 16.y is the eleventh chapter of Left in the Dust.
Plot[edit]
Hugh Legendre takes his daughter, Milly Legendre, to see the aftermath of a goblin attack that horribly wiped out a family and one of their neighbours.
She steps into a little girls bedroom and spots a pair of eyes beneath the bed, she runs to tell her father who goes to deal with it. Suddenly she’s grabbed from behind by a goblin hanging upside down from the attic. She screams as her dad comes and blasts it away.
Alexander welcomes her into his Demesne, she asks him if she could stay at the Blue Heron Institute after graduating. Alexander lists all the senior students then tells her that a spot has opened up due to one of them becoming engaged but someone else is already slated to fill that spot. He asks her to justify why she should get it instead, she tries arguing that the good her family does should be rewarded but refuses for pragmatic reasons. She suggests her having Seth or Braxton’s room but Alexander says no due to the politics of it. Eventually he lets her have a room in a workshop for $200. He also tells to to strive to go beyond what’s expected of an ordinary Sealer.
Her mom and dad ring her to warn her about the feud between Alexander and Bristow and reminder what side she should be on. She says that if she sides with Bristow and he losses Alexander will forgive anyway.
Milly drives to a church in her Lordship, enters under the stage, opens a secret door in the wall and finds a starving man turned to stone and bound by tree roots clutching a jar. The jar is a Gu Jar, containing a collection of beasts, goblins and evil spirits and the man is a former sealer that’s preventing the contents of the jar from escaping.
He’s rude and vulgar due to being tainted by goblins, Milly suggests that the things inside the jar might be dead by now and that he can go free but he refuses to listen. As a fellow sealer she asks for any secret knowledge he might have and he gives her a ward.
A group of goblins appear and ask to be let in again, in exchange they offering to play music for her, she uses bindings to fling them across the space.
When she leaves she cries because Talbot is no longer noble.
America Tedd visits her in her trailer along with Fernanda and Sullivan Fletcher, Musser’s nephew. She makes them hot chocolate.
They all leave to visit an The Beorgmann, an old Other that her family have sealed away that kidnaps children, it has at least forty trapped at the moment. She sets about repairing the wards.
Suddenly Marlen arrives at her territory along with several other intruders.
The Beorgmann tries to negotiate it’s release, saying it will attack her enemies for her. It claims her father once made that deal, offering up his own child, Cabe Legendre as a sacrifice.
The Beorgmann offers another deal, to return to her three children and to defeat it’s enemies and then return to be bound again. It makes it because it thinks her character is weak.
Avery arrives followed by Ann, Ann attacks Milly. They agree a truce whilst Milly works on the wards. Milly gives the Beorgmann the names of the last three children to be taken and lets it free telling it to return afterwards, it releases the children and attacks.
Milly, America, Fernanda and Sullivan flee as an elementalist arrives to back up Ann and Avery. A cab arrives and Fernanda asks for a ride but Milly stops her, realising that it’s a trap by Odis.
They flee and Milly abandons her Lordship.
Back at base everyone is arguing. They’ve lost seven territories tonight and are starting to suspect that Marlen is compromised.
Milly finds an unlocked diary with a warding sign on it. As she's investigating Basil Winters walks in and releases the Others inside the diary.
