Summer Break (chapter) is the nineteenth chapter of Summer Break.

Plot

Lucy updates Nicolette and asks her to help find the ephemeral bird, then she discusses with the other two what to do next. The crack in the wall has been sealed by smoke, Verona has her jar of anti-smoke that can clear the way. Zed offers them the music John gave Brie of Yalda singing.

We get a fragment of text from John, him and the comrades are having difficulty with the choir so he calls for the test.

We skip to Jasmine on her date with Steven. They’re talking about the masks they wear in social situations and Steven says he regularly goes on dates with women on the weekend, he then informs her he’ll be leaving tonight. They proceed to talk about their respective parents, Steven tells her he killed his.

He points out that Miss is looking at them, when Jasmine tries to get away he grabs her and doesn’t let her go. Rook arrives and raises her cane which Steven grabs, when he releases it she jabs him with it. The two of them walk off together until they get to Jasmine’s work friend, Ida.

Steven returns to the party and tells Jasmines boss that overreacted to his off colour joke. Calvin comes over to Jasmine to sort things out, he says Steven will not alter their contract if Jasmine agrees to drive him back to his motel but after hearing that he grabbed her he reconsiders.

Steven's phone rings and plays a ring tone with frightened and angry voices in it. He tires removing the battery but is shocked so he drops it in someone else's wine.

Steven goes to walk inside the house when a centipede appears and people shriek, Steven says he feels bullied and leaves.

Jasmine goes to leave but as she approaches her car Miss walks past a drops her keys, a note is attached to them, Jasmine cries for help saying Steven is in the back seat of her car. He tries and fails to open the door and Jasmine turns the car alarm on and calls the police.

Avery, Verona and Lucy debate if they should use the glamour finding glass. Suddenly both Lucy and Avery’s phones ring, Zed informs them that Steven has been captured and Nicolette says she got a lead on the bird but that theirs a trap. The bird lures an owl into going after Lucy but Avery manages to save her.

They loose the songbird again and Verona uses the glass to find it, causing it to shatter and damage her hand. She finds it and uses the bottle of anti-air she made to remove the air beneath the birds wings. Rook traps it in a small wooden box. She passes the ring to Avery who goes to give it to John.

Miss appears and tells them it might not be enough and that the contest is drawing to a close. Lucy and Verona head off the Tashlit’s to heal Verona’s hand.

Cut back to John. The judges call on him to forswear the trio. They say they’ve played rough with karmic law, challenging Finnea based on oaths she didn’t swear, gainsaying Lawrence Bristow and having multiple oaths outstanding. John refuses on the grounds that they’ve not actually broken an oath. They say Charles test was different.

The trio arrive back at the arena, all the Kennet Others are their. Avery tells the rest of them that she plans to leave Kennet and Lucy hugs her. Verona struggles to process the news and has to step away.

The judges leave the arena, after them comes Johns squad mates and last is Charles as the new Carmine.

The Carmine tells Matthew to decided is Edith is either forsworn or released. He then says that he’ll make Kennet the seat of his new throne, always a days travel away. Also he has unmade the Hungry Choir and titles himself the Carmine Exile. The Aurum leave and the Sable remakes the Arena before departing also.

Musser leaves taking Raquel and Wye with him, Zed says he’s heading back to the Blue Heron Institute.
