Mask

A mask is an object worn to cover or obscure the face.

Masks used by the Kennet Trio

The Kennet Trio made wooden masks for each other to wear during their Awakening. Each mask was chosen to represent an animal whose characteristics each girl wished to emulate.

Lucy's mask

Lucy wore a fox mask. She chose a fox because it has fangs, but also chooses cleverness over brute force.<ref>“I picked the fox mask because I wanted something with fangs.  It’s important to me that I have fangs. Lucy's mask was made by Avery. It was painted orange,<ref>Avery handed Lucy a fox mask, painted orange. - Lost for Words 1.1</ref> with white around the eyes and the edges of the mask.<ref>Her hat is fairly straightforward as witches hats go, black, and her mask is an orange-red fox's mask with hints of white here and there, to outline the eyes and mask's edges. - Word of God on Reddit</ref> She later inscribed a diagram on the inside of her mask to make the eyes glow red<ref>In battle mode, her fox's mask has eyes that smoke and glow red and she may be smoking due to the backpack rune. - Word of God on Reddit</ref>, and then modified it so she could see in the dark.<ref>More importantly, she’d done some work a long time ago to turn that light into something to penetrate the dark.  A bit of night vision. - Gone Ahead 7.2</ref>

Verona's mask

Verona wore a cat mask. She chose a cat because of its confidence.<ref>“I picked the cat for my mask because I wanted a confident animal, and I want to be confident.  I wanted an animal that’s comfortable in nighttime and shadow and you’d better believe I’m ready to jump in with both feet first and join some of you in the nighttime and shadows.” - Lost for Words 1.1</ref>

Verona's mask was made by Lucy. It was a simple black cat mask, with a pink nose and white edges around the eyes and mouth.<ref>Verona shook her head.  A black cat mask.  It was simple, but she liked it. - Lost for Words 1.1</ref><ref>Her mask is a black cat's mask, with white highlights at the eyes to make it not disappear entirely in darkness, and similar for the pink of the nose and white, upside-down 'Y' shape of the mouth. - Word of God on Reddit</ref> It had an inscription on the inside similar to Lucy's.<ref>Inscription: from the interior of Verona’s mask.  The structure is similar to Lucy’s, but it has three interlocking diamond symbols. - Inventories</ref>

The mask was broken by Verona's dad during a major argument.<ref>The cat mask gave as she pulled it from the confines of the bag, broken into three pieces, with the third piece clattering to the floor. - Shaking Hands 9.9</ref> Verona felt that she needed to improve her Practice and take care of some things in order to earn the right to repair her mask.<ref>Verona dug in the front of her bag, found the mask in three pieces, all jammed in together, and set them down.  Later.  Once she knew what she was doing.  When she’d earned it again.

Avery's mask

Avery wore a deer mask. She chose a deer because it is fast, and she considered speed to be something she both enjoyed and was good at.<ref>“I picked the deer because I run, and that’s what I’m good at.  I run fast, I skate fast, I like to go fast.  Maybe I run in other parts of my life.  I don’t know…” - Lost for Words 1.1</ref>

Avery's mask was made by Verona. It had short antlers that slid through holes in her hat,<ref>Her mask is a deer mask with short antlers and the antlers can be slid into slots/holes in her hat, which has a slightly more triangular or leaf-shaped brim. - Word of God on Reddit</ref> and was painted tan around the eyes and nose, and speckled brown around the edges.<ref>Verona had put her bag down, and now she unzipped it.  She pulled out the mask.  A deer mask, carved out of wood and painted with tan at the nose and around the eyes, a speckled darker brown at the edges and ears.  She handed it to Avery. - Lost for Words 1.1</ref>

One of the antlers on the mask broke when America attacked Avery during the field trip to High Fall, but the antler would remain suspended in place due to its spiritual reality.<ref>Her antler on her mask had broken when America had come at her, but by her Sight, she could see it.  Suspended there.  Belonging there.  A gap between the base and the upper part she could swipe a finger through. - Vanishing Points 8.8</ref><ref>Her spiritual antler having enough to it that the actual antler could float there. - Shaking Hands 9.11</ref> However, the antler would fall down if seen by Innocents.<ref>Snowdrop lunged.  Avery jolted, because it sure seemed like Snow was about to push her off of her seat on the rooftop’s edge.  Instead, Snowdrop caught the bit of antler.

“What was that?  It stopped working?”

Snowdrop pointed.

Some people were on the street, glancing Avery’s way.

“Doesn’t work if normal civilians see.  That’s… not the most useless feature.  Means I won’t get tripped up with the black rope.” - Shaking Hands 9.8</ref>

Masks used against Maricica

When preparing to confront Maricica, the Trio wore different masks to represent animals contrary to their nature. Lucy's mask was a goat,<ref>The goat, for Lucy, who admittedly butted heads with others more often than she liked.  She’d picked the goat before reading the preliminary stuff on curses, but apparently it was also an animal with links to the deleterious practices.  Dark, offensive practices.  Curses.  Sometimes it was a sacrificial animal, sometimes an omen, for some lines of cursework, that appeared before the victim to indicate that they were well and truly boned. - Dash to Pieces 11.2</ref> Verona's a snake,<ref>Tonight, Verona wouldn’t be the cat, but the snake.  Or the lizard.  Or the dragon.  It looked reptilian.  The mask was the snake.  Verona wore a green top with spaghetti straps, simple and slim, along with a skirt with several overlapping layers. - Dash to Pieces 11.2</ref> and Avery's was a Wolf.<ref>Avery would be the bait… until she wasn’t.  Wearing red and wearing a Wolf’s mask. - Dash to Pieces 11.2</ref> These masks were also augmented by Ramjam with nails to make them more effective against fae.<ref>Their masks had been redone.  Ramjam had hammered in a ton of nails, each nail bent and mashed into the wood, often sideways.  The inside of the mask was actually smooth enough to be bearable.  There were a few Ramjam-shaped dents on the inside, suggesting he’d smacked his forehead against wood or vice versa, until the interior was suitably smooth. - Dash to Pieces 11.2</ref>

Other masks

Some Others wear (or appear to wear) masks, such as Crooked Rook<ref>Shaking Hands 9.5</ref><ref>Shaking Hands 9.Z</ref> and the Feorgbold.<ref>The cloth had been white to begin with, it looked like, but it was badly stained.  He –or she– wore a mask or a helmet shaped like an overlarge bird’s skull, with a pair of antlers. - Bonds 1.2</ref> The Sisters of the Torch wore white masks.<ref>Outside, I could see the sphinx and a number of women with white masks and rings that blazed red. - Subordination 6.3</ref>
