It is a common issue for Technology to have an inconsistent effect in the Otherverse.
Particulars[edit]
Ambient spirits are a fundamental part of magic, if something is unfamiliar to them by being to new then it will not work as well.<ref>
Pale Implementum Text on 'Digital Implements'
The Digital Implement is any device normally in the Technomancer’s province, including blackberries, handheld televisions, and radios. Too unfamiliar to spirits to have a ‘diagram’, the digital implement foregoes the upsides and uses of an implement for a material means of connecting one’s Self to the digital reaches and better extend that self through those spaces. The item’s value can be expected to sit at middling to low values and then plummet when the item falls out of common use, dragging one’s Self with it. Technomancer families may have the means by which to extend this ‘shelf life’ and protect the Self when using such devices, but many choose conventional implements regardless. - excerpt from Implementum, quoted in Bonus Material: Implementum Text</ref> This factor is helped by the fact that technology itself is constantly updating, cellular phones become obsolete relatively quickly, a handful of years,<ref>“There are two more ways. The implement is a tool that would shape how you use the practice. A lifelong commitment to being someone who wields a sword in coordination with the practice, if you will. It would shape how others see you and how the practice responds to you. It could be a cup, a wand, a scroll, or any other thing that reflects you as an individual.”
“Could I pick my cell phone?” Avery asked.
“The ways of Others are old and cell phones are new. The cell phone you picked today might well be outdated in two years, and forgotten in twenty. I would gently suggest, Avery Kelly, that if one’s first thought is a cell phone, they aren’t ready to pick an implement.” - Excerpt from Stolen Away 2.6</ref> in part due to Moore's Law, and partly due to planned obsolescence.
Technomancers obviously deal with modern technology as part of their practice.<ref>False Moves 12.9</ref>
While Others can learn to drive cars, or have them as part of their makeup such as Killwagon, a given car is more likely to have a human behind the wheel than an Other.
Internet[edit]
As of Pact the Internet could not be said to even be 50 years old especially as it is distinguished from it's various predeccesors such as the DARPAnet. Access to this is usually considered part of the Electro-radio or Digital Aether, as such it is possible for an Other such as as Nex Machina or any other sufficiently "large" to affect this "realm" and thus the internet.
It's use has led to the proliferation of various Living Rituals.
Firearms[edit]
Guns have been around for over 600 years by the time Pale happens.<ref>met museum "12. Armor became obsolete because of firearms." October 2004 https://www.metmuseum.org/toah/hd/aams/hd_aams.htm</ref> Still, Guns are inconsistent with their effects on Others.
Trivia[edit]
- On a pedantic level technology, which just means an application of knowledge, can involve using rocks to open coconuts but processes such as Knapping which turns stones into useable tools like various types of blades. Take an investment of time and prior material. Thus just as paper making and mass printing are needed to make a newspaper technology is a product of centuries of knowledge and material indicative of time and energy invested in making them happen.
