Playing a Part 15.5 is the fifth chapter of Playing a Part.
Plot[edit]
Verona visits Guilherme, finding him slumped on his cave floor. He apologises for her hand. Verona asks for answers about her hand a Guilherme advices against it. He tells her the wound might last her entire life, he says if the story isn’t finished she might be able to heal it at the conclusion.
Verona gives Alpeana two spirits and some abyssal nails, she then takes a sword Guilherme offered her and breaks it to turn it into glamour. Verona suggests Winter might end when the courts change and Guilherme threatens to kill her for belittling his court.
Back at home Verona’s dad is complaining to someone on the phone.
Verona and Jeremy are making out together, they stop and he massages her hand. They talk about playing video games together. At one point Jeremy says that Lucy and Wallace are great together and as Verona leaves that line repeats itself in Verona’s head. She thinks he’s comparing there relationship with Lucy and Wallace’s and that she failing because she doesn’t want a romantic relationship with him.
Verona is with Tashlit fixing up her shack, she almost hit her hand with a hammer when her injured hand acts up. She thinks about the fact that Tashlit hasn’t replied to her offer of being her familiar.
Verona is saying goodbye to her mom, throughout their conversation her mother keeps reassure her by she feels as if she doesn't believe her.
Verona is at Avery’s failing to get to sleep at 2.55 AM. She goes to the bathroom to pee and thinks of all her failings, she texts Jeremy and sends him pictures of her breasts in the hopes he’ll be more likely to stay around. He offers to reciprocate but she says no so instead he sends her cat pictures. He then sends her a video of him and Melissa playing with Sir. After that she eventually goes back to sleep.
Her and Avery apply magical eyeliner to protect them from smoke and dust. The two of them prepare to start summoning Lost Others, they draw a protective circle and set up emergency measures. Avery sets up a path they can escape to using wooden toy animals. Cherryop and Snowdrop are on standby to warn other people in case something goes wrong.
Verona thinks about the role each of them have, for Avery it’s making connections and preventing other groups becoming a problem, for Verona it’s figuring out how to deal with Charles and kill him.
They release Ratko the Wrongdoer and he escapes his binding. Every time they try to look at him he moves, preventing them from seeing him. He says something in Russian then starts walking on the ceiling and manages to get into an air duct. Avery tries to follow him whilst Verona goes upstairs. They try and talk to Ratko and Verona uses her phone to translate, he agrees not to hurt anyone and they make a deal together.
Next they summon Sootsleeves, a Lost queen dressed in rags holding a torch and riding a horse. She and her kingdom agree to help them three times in exchange for being released. After she’s freed all her subjects enter, they all change to match modern appearances, then Sootsleeves sends some rats and urchins out as spies. In order to get out she has to drive out the window, destroying it in the process.
Next they free the Car Song, it sings in response to every question they ask it. It agrees to their terms and heads off.
Next they free the tearaway kid, a misshapen child dressed as an angle. He asks if they have a bird with a city on her back, he says he’ll help them in exchange for them releasing her. He agrees to go after Hugh Legendre. They free him and he briefly turns into an angel before removing his home made halo, wings and toga and returning to normal. He puts on a new outfit and turns into a business man, they come up with a cover story of him thinking of buying this place when he saw a goblin.
They find Sootsleeves who tells them Thea is planning to spirit away some children. She asks them if they want to use a favour for her to help stop Thea and Verona says she’ll cancel on her mom.

- Guilherme as a Winter fae repeats himself again, he gives a speech to Verona that is very similar to what he said to Clem in Back Away 5.c.
