Personality

Grumble considers himself to have lived a good life, and is proud of his family.<ref>“I lived a good life,” he said, speaking like he was mumbling with a mouthful of gravel.  “I’m content to watch over this, proud of everyone, and what my daughter has done and made.” - Stolen Away 2.3</ref> He loves sports.<ref>He loved sports and she had early memories of sitting on his knee and watching a baseball game, understanding almost none of what her Grumble told her about the contest between pitcher and catcher and loving it all anyway.- Shaking Hands 9.8</ref> He also has divisive and intolerant political views.<ref>“Grumble’s really into shitty politics, you know,” Sheridan told her. - Leaving a Mark 4.4</ref>

Relationships

Avery

Grumble clearly loves Avery.<ref>“I love you,” he said.  He let go of her hand to reach out, poking roughly at the side of her belly.  She smiled and pulled back out of the way.  He added, “You’re my favorite.”

“I wonder if you say that to most of the grandkids.”

“One or two,” he mumbled, winking again.  “If I want a driver.  Or a favor.  Mostly you.  And you don’t have to do anything but be you.”</ref> However, due to his political views she is hesitant to come out to him,<ref>Avery shrugged.  “It’s just another person in a long line of people that I don’t get to be close with.  Mom, dad, Grumble- I knew Grumble probably wouldn’t be cool with the whole gay thing even closer to the start of the year." - Gone Ahead 7.5</ref> which has caused a significant rift in their relationship.<ref>Grumble had been a source of light and love and now he was the biggest source of the gloom, so to speak, at Avery’s house.  And that sucked. - Shaking Hands 9.8</ref>

He dislikes Declan's video games because he thinks they promote violence.<ref>“These thin’s they promote violence,” Grumble groaned.  “Chill’ren play’m and it warps’m.”- Excerpt from Dash to Pieces 11.8</ref>

Appearance/Description

Grumble had a stroke which caused him to have reduced mobility,<ref name="stroke">His answering hug was stiff and rough, but the smile he wore when she pulled back was genuine, albeit halved by the stroke he’d once had. - Stolen Away 2.3</ref> and thus requires to be cared for.<ref>Avery’s ‘grumble’ was getting help eating from Avery’s mom, and he kept making little choking sounds while swallowing. - Stolen Away 2.4</ref> He spends a lot of time watching news shows with divisive politics on television.<ref>“Don’t you get bored of watching that?” she asked.

Grumble said something unintelligible.

“It’s always unpleasant and awful.”

“Got’na know whats go’on’n in the world tuday,” he mumbled.

“People shouting at each other.  Being hateful and intolerant.  Lying constantly.  Companies being awful.”

Chronology

Grumble had four brothers and one sister.<ref>“Six’ve us, five boys,” he told her.  He looked around.  “House’s big as this room.” - Leaving a Mark 4.4</ref> He was born overseas and travelled a lot as a kid before settling in Canada.<ref>Grumble was all of those things, and he was related to her.  He’d traveled a lot as a kid and had come to Canada and set the family up here, but his true roots were overseas. - Shaking Hands 9.8</ref> He suffered a stroke which left him with reduced mobility.<ref name="stroke" />

Due to his illness he stayed in Kennet when the Kelly family split.<ref>“And they’ll be long distance.  They asked earlier, if we kids were to split up… who would want to go?”
